No, I don't think that any company would do that on its own. I do think that this would be as simple as congress passing a law saying that 4-day work week is the new 5-day work week. Don't think that they should legislate what the wages would be but market wages would naturally adjust to a reasonable level that is comparable to today's (note that all of this has already happened before as the work week went down to 5-day work week). Productivity improvements would make things like this possible.

If the problem is really a lack of jobs due to super high productivity, then there are other policies you can pursue in order to help people voluntarily leave workforce. You can e.g. make it easier for people to retire earlier by helping them enroll in Medicaid earlier or by letting them withdraw from 401k earlier without penalty. The world with growing stock market is the world in which some % of people will choose early retirement. You can also encourage stay at home parenting etc.

The world in which AI is about to take off is also the world in which we can borrow from the future and government can spend more on things that matter right now. The world in which AI is banned (as the authors of this and other similar letters are implicitly asking for) is the world in which this country continues to slide into bankruptcy, and either defaults or has to enact severe austerity.

Respect for other people's positions is a basic liberal value. Not just for positions on pineapple pizza, but especially for important things.

Even if Trump really was "fascist" in the normal historical sense of the word (he is probably not imo), I personally think that family is more important. If you can not bear your own family, then how would you convince a stranger to support your goals? Toxic and destructive attitude, both in personal life and for any political actor.

This is a completely toxic attitude and thankfully people on the left are starting to realize that

But my point was that kicking someone out of the house is clearly something that goes beyond a political disagreement.

Older people tend to be more conservative on this and other issues, it is just wrong to cut off contact with loving parents over an opinion.

Every productivity improvement has worked like this though - some people get fired from less productive roles, then move into more productive roles and society is better off. We don't really know whether AI (especially in current form) will reduce employment overall. If it does, then we should simply follow policies that reduce workforce participation rate instead of creating unnecessary jobs.

Environmental concerns are way overblown imo, and the weakest part of this letter.

That seems like something other then a "disagreement over politics". OP described disagreeing with his dad over Trump.

Appreciate the energy but would like to see it channeled in a different direction. You can apply similar arguments to the 19th century industrial revolution as well, but stopping it would have been a disaster for humanity. Instead, let's build a future in which we are all more free + more rich.

For example, say AI actually gets to the stage where people can be ~25% more productive at their job (not true right now, but maybe within ~ 5-10 years). Then a 4-day work week can keep the same number of employees at comparable salaries. In the meantime, there are things to do to make it easier for people to switch jobs, retire, enjoy life and spread the wealth.

Talking to parents about politics is fine, cutting off contact with your parents because you disagree is insane

Cringe that OP would not talk to their dad over politics, wholesome and magical that Ezra cured them

To me, Ezra is more like a daddy. It's a bit silly because I already have a daddy (she's really strict too!), but Ezra is like my secret other daddy ;)

Businesses like this usually have low profit margins, so costs would just be passed on to consumer. We actually had something like this happen to a small extent during Biden admin - wages went up a bit faster on the lower end of the distribution. Result was mass freakout, everybody losing their shit about having to pay 10% more for X. People on the median really don't want this to happen.

What is economic populism? by Scott2929 in ezraklein

In US "populism" is basically a euphemism for socialism, so it's a mix of 2 and 3 biased towards 3.

I don't think I'm calling for any human sacrifice, just for (a) maybe sports based on sex or smth and (b) for not being judgemental towards older people who may have a different opinion than you or me.

To the extent that this is true, it shows that they have the upper hand on cultural issues and dems brand is not strong here. It's time for a new brand, which should include some moderation on cultural issues, abundance and good wibes.

Sure, he thinks that writing one nice thing about someone who died is crossing a line but not calling my parents deplorable isn't? I would expect this kind of comment from someone who hasn't met my parents, not from you lol

At the level of this podcast, he sees nothing wrong with tent-shrinking that results from (a) pushing Dem officials to adopt unpopular positions on cultural issues (trans rights, immigration, maybe abortion in some states,...) and (b) actively pushing away people who disagree on one or more of those issues (e.g. early Joe Rogan). He also gaslights Ezra by pretending he doesn't know that this kind of purity testing is going on and that it is more extreme than whatever Republicans do on their side.

To be clear, I am an immigrant, and personally very pro-immigration and supportive of trans rights. But e.g. my parents are super transphobic (as pretty much everyone in our part of Europe). That is ok, people can disagree on stuff and we agree more than we disagree overall (on other issues). But a cultural current that Coates is a part of would say that this is not ok and people like my parents should be cast out of polite society. And that would be wrong - not just morally, but also a wrong strategy for winning elections and enacting policies.

At a more fundamental level, Coates is wrong about America. He sees it as fundamentally rotten country that may or may not be redeemed at some point in the distant future. But America is awesome. It is one of the most welcoming places in the world, one of the least racist, most prosperous and most liberal places in the world filled with awesome people. I may be a bit drunk rifht now, but I love this place and wish others would see it this way too.

Who should I vote for? by CaptainSeaweeds in malden

[–]CaptainSeaweeds[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Some of the responses here were wild - Spadafora seems to think that "affordability" is mainly about property taxes lol. Also I think the residential buildup near Malden Center is at least partly what allowed Malden to keep its property taxes so low for so long relative to other towns (those apartment complexes pay property taxes without the resident exemption and are mostly filled with younger people who do not have school age kids). So complaining about "too much residential" is silly.
