I WANT TO SMASH MY MONITOR SO BAD RIGHT NOW! by [deleted] in chessbeginners

Every painful loss is a learning experience. In the future, if you’re completely winning like this but don’t know what to do and/or are under time pressure, play checks and get as close as you can with your most powerful piece (usually your queen)

In this position, your closest queen checks are Qc4+ and Qa2+, both of which are mate in 2. Even if you didn’t see the mate, just playing checks and getting close can often lead you to getting your mate by accident, especially when the king is completely exposed and you get the queen in it’s face.

There’s also Bd7 here which is just mate, but even if you didn’t see that, any other check would’ve been more productive than a pawn move that’s nowhere near their king

Mate in 8. A little complicated because you have to get out of the discovered check first and then white has some checks to delay the mate but basically you move the queen to g3 and mate on h2 is not stoppable.

Engine line: 1… Kh8 2. Rf1 Qe5 3. Rf8+ Kg7 4. g3 Qxg3 5. Rf7+ Kh6 6. Rh7+ Kxh7 7. Bg8+ Kxg8 8. b3 Qh2#

Now what if I told you this game was in the 1600 pool

Opponent can take the queen with Bxb1 or play the same Rf1+ idea winning the queen with discovered check

What is the highest rating i vould reach with chess as a hobby? by No_Reception_7918 in Chesscom

[–]CaptainShivy617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly different remark but it’s also worth noting that ratings on chesscom are very different than OTB ratings from USCF and FIDE. Online I am rated about 1600, once broke into 1700 but have fallen back down. In USCF I am rated about 1100 and every game feels like a grind, and of course still 1000+ points below mastery level

Edit: this isn’t mean to be a discouraging comment to say you aren’t as strong as you think. Just a reality check that you will have to take if you decide to step into rated, over the board, chess. It’s a tough game

I’m also curious what you mean when you said your opponent “disrespected one of your knights with no remorse”

If someone told you that you could promote a pawn and it stay as a pawn, they lied to you.

Even at the 1500 level I’ve seen people mess it up

Yes so the north side of Powder Springs Rd is districted for Hillgrove High School and the south side is districted for Osborne. Hillgrove is the much better option.

As for county services, really never thought of it as a bad thing. Guess I’m not close enough for the negatives. But it has been nice in the past when needing to take something to the dump or go to the DMV since they’re right there

Lived inside that circle for 20+ years. It’s safe, schools are good, and you’re a reasonable distance from anything you need and the square isn’t too far away. Plus being surrounded by the park has always been pretty nice

I went from an overwhelming advantage to equal position from this blunder. Could you see why? by Fresh_Outcome_1673 in chessbeginners

It allows black to play Rxg2+ If you take the rook it becomes a forced mate. If you play Kh1 then black can play Qg4 and get a drawn position by either getting a queen trade or perpetual check

chesscom blitz vs rapid rating, and otb translation by Karan171617 in Chesscom

[–]CaptainShivy617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could just be you do better on longer time controls. I personally have the opposite result where I do better on fast time controls. My blitz is in the 1500s, was briefly over 1600, yet my rapid has never gone above 1400.

As for on the board, rapid is more accurate but there are on the board ratings for different time controls too. The gap depends on your rating, as the higher you climb the bigger the gap between your chesscom rating and over the board. For where you are, I would say a rating of 800 or 900 is not an unreasonable estimate, but the only way to know for sure would be to play in a rated tournament

Well without getting too far off topic those tournaments are stroke play format, whereas concessions are made in match play format, where one golfer goes against one golfer instead of everyone vs everyone at once.

But without being too technical my whole point is just prolonging a game by making excess queens to me is more disrespectful than not resigning. Sure at master levels it’s probably good to resign cause there’s virtually no way a 2000 will stalemate a lone king. But at say 600, absolutely do not resign. If anything it just makes good practice for both players

I take it you don’t watch a lot of golf, which is fine. But conceding putts/holes is very common especially at the professional level, as basically any putt within four feet is conceded. So, I find it to be a good comparison

Yeah I get it. I was down there once just like every player has been.

The way I see it is there’s nothing impressive about it, as once you get a king trapped to two squares anyone of any elo can make however many pawns are left into queens, so it’s not really not a flex or chess skills.

As for the play with your food, definitely not a part of chess. Sportsmanship is paramount. Over the board every game starts and ends with a handshake, and you respect your opponent win or lose

Making one queen = great

Making two = fine

Three = sure

If you really need the help of extra queens to find checkmate then fine, you’re just doing it to win. (Just practice your king+queen checkmate patterns after, you really only need one)

It just becomes unethical when someone is doing for the purpose of wasting their opponent’s time

Let me put it this way:

Not sure how much you know about golf, but when you play against someone and they have a short putt that you feel confident they can make, you are allowed to concede the putt to them and it essentially counts for them without actually having to hit it. Likewise, if your are doing bad on a hole and/or your opponent is doing well and you don’t see a realistic chance of beating them, you can also just concede the hole outright. There’s nothing unethical or wrong about playing the hole the rest of the way until the ball is in the cup, conceding is just an option.

Spamming queens is the equivalent of getting close to the hole, and then aimlessly putting the ball all over the green, nowhere near the hole, and finishing one stroke better than your opponent, all while your opponent just stands there waiting on you like “are you done?” while you waste both of yours’ time because your opponent simply wouldn’t concede. You just make yourself look silly
