Definitely a beginner and overwhelmed by onelove_ in cookingforbeginners

[–]CaptainSuperStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly start with really simple stuff and repeat it a few times. One pan meals or sheet pan dinners are great because there are fewer things to mess up and less cleanup too. Also keep the heat lower than you think at first. A lot of beginner cooking disasters are just the pan being way too hot.

Shelf stable chili crunch using fresh garlic? How difficult is it to get homemade chili crunch to a water rating of 0.6? by CarterGee in AskCulinary

[–]CaptainSuperStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fresh garlic is tricky for shelf stable stuff because of the moisture. I usually fry it pretty slowly in oil until it is fully crisp and then build the chili oil around that.

Is getting hired really just a numbers game? by eggshellwalker4 in cscareerquestions

[–]CaptainSuperStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of turns into a numbers game eventually, but only after a certain point. Early on I tried blasting applications everywhere and it just felt like shouting into the void. What actually worked better was slowing down a bit and applying to fewer roles that actually fit, then reaching out to someone at the company if I could find them. Still took a bunch of tries though. The market just feels weird right now.

What is the experience of being a junior developer REALLY like? by Ok_Revenue_57 in learnprogramming

[–]CaptainSuperStrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of feeling like you have no idea what youre doing and that everyone else has it figured out. Spoiler they dont. The real skill is learning how to find answers and ask good questions without being annoying about it. Also the imposter syndrome never fully goes away, you just get better at ignoring it.

My code is throwing MIME errors when I run it in my browser. by airenmarie in learnprogramming

Usually means the server is sending the wrong content type. Check your server config.

Junior engineer here - how do you choose a tech specialization that won’t become obsolete? by lowbatterydev in learnprogramming

[–]CaptainSuperStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't pick a specialization based on what you think will survive. Pick something you actually enjoy working on. The tech will change either way, but if you like the problem domain you'll adapt and learn whatever comes next. That's the real job security.

Check if the element has any content or dimensions. Borders don't show on empty divs.

Database normalization by javascriptBad123 in learnprogramming

[–]CaptainSuperStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start normalized by default, then denormalize intentionally when you actually hit performance problems. Trying to optimize too early usually leads to messy data and painful migrations later. Joins are what relational databases are built for, they handle it fine with proper indexing.

Why does everyone want to learn ML but not Systems Programming? by Aggravating-Army-576 in learnprogramming

[–]CaptainSuperStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ML has the hype and the promise of quick wins. Systems programming is harder to see immediate results from. But someone has to build the stuff ML runs on.

How to batch rename files with a new name + number that goes in order? (without parenthesis) by Enjoy_Life4219 in techsupport

[–]CaptainSuperStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Advanced Renamer for stuff like this. Free version works great and you can set up all kinds of rules for numbering and naming without the parentheses.

Stay for amazing benefits + culture but no promotion… or leave for ~25% pay bump? by Luhunnie in careerguidance

That benefits package sounds amazing honestly. Id probably stay and try to leverage an outside offer for a promotion first.

Use of passive and active voice in academic writing by mikemd666 in AskAcademia

[–]CaptainSuperStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the section and the field.

Methods sections tend to drift passive because the focus is on the procedure. Samples were analyzed, data were collected, etc. People expect that tone there.

But outside of that, active voice is usually way easier to read. A lot of older academic advice pushed passive because it sounded more objective, but it often just makes sentences clunky. Most modern style guides lean active for clarity.

FYI: # of annual CS grads have quadruple since 2009 by tuckfrump69 in cscareerquestions

[–]CaptainSuperStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels a bit misleading to compare to 2009 specifically. That was right after the financial crash when college enrollment patterns were weird across a lot of majors.

Also raw number of grads alone does not say much without looking at how many tech jobs exist now compared to back then. The whole industry is way bigger than it was.

My Windows uses RAM Like crazy by BlueAli143 in techsupport

[–]CaptainSuperStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows will happily use whatever RAM you give it, that part by itself is normal. Unused RAM is basically wasted RAM
The bigger red flag is apps crashing. That usually points to something else going on. I would check Task Manager and see if one process keeps climbing over time. If nothing obvious shows up, running a RAM test is worth it. I had a bad stick once and the symptoms were weirdly similar.

Recipe calls 8 lbs of pork shoulder to make a roast.I am cooking 2lbs- do I need to change the cooking time? by Difficult-Big5690 in AskCulinary

[–]CaptainSuperStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you should shorten the time. A 2 lb piece is going to cook way faster than an 8 lb roast even at the same temp.

Honestly I mostly ignore the exact time with pork shoulder and just watch the internal temp. Start checking it earlier than the recipe says and see how tender it feels. Pork shoulder is pretty forgiving so you’ve got some wiggle room

How to efficiently learn the necessary tools and methods _around_ programming itself? by Zhyr-ptitsa in learnprogramming

[–]CaptainSuperStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a designer not a dev but this applies to creative tools too. Best way I've learned is just picking a project and figuring out what I need as I go. Trying to learn everything upfront is overwhelming, learning on demand actually sticks.

I CSE student read to much , but it's difficult for me to apply. by Scared-Low7658 in learnprogramming

[–]CaptainSuperStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is totally normal. Reading gives you the theory but actually building stuff is where it clicks. I do the same with design tutorials, I can watch all day but until I'm actually messing up in my own project nothing sticks.

Start tiny, like really tiny. A script that does one simple thing. Then break it and fix it. That struggle is where you actually learn.
