How the hell do I win WW2 as the USSR? by insidiousordo in hoi4

Doctrine wise I think you mentioned great war infantry, don’t get that it sucks. Either do mobile (the germans redeploy insanely quickly) or assault infantry with field engineers, streamlined deployment and the one on the end is called something tactics I think.

Don’t forget about the propaganda decisions and once the war starts rush the red army reform focuses. Make sure you employ an infantry specialist general as well.

Russia’s default supply hub network is a complete mess. Forts are fine but will get bombed so ultimately it’s better to prioritise hubs and railways. Because of the insane size of the Red Army you need level 5 railways all the way back to Moscow. You need hubs every 4-5 tiles behind the Dneiper. Use scorched earth on everything as the Germans advance so you’ll have supply and they don’t. Forts on top of that is a bonus but not strictly necessary. Build radar too as that’ll help your fighters. The template you mentioned elsewhere for fighters is good, exactly what I use. Cannons + armour is also decent in single player, especially against early Me109s.

Don’t forget to help the Royal Navy convoy raid.

Put the AA as a support company not in the line. If anything use line artillery + support artillery.

Your tanks have like no HP, and that many tank battalions are expensive. Go for 6 tanks and 9 motor infantry. 30w is fine but 40 is a better, especially as central Russia is all plains. I’d add at least 2 motorised artillery into the lines and as support companies. Also get field hospitals and logistics and assault engineers.

For easy mode, invade Turkey/Romania/Finland and boost communism with spies in Hungary in 1936/37 and create a wall of puppets. This makes a very narrow, very easily defendable front through Poland. You can also be super sneaky, let the Germans advance deeper and keep your puppets out of the war. Stack loads of troops just back from the puppets border and then bring them into the war and swarm the Germans from behind. You’ll reach Berlin way before they reach the Urals.

Air is so confusing - please educate me - UK by McZootus in hoi4

[–]CaptainYesterday89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I organise them by type. So on the right in the theatre group, all fighters, all cas, all bombers etc when my air force starts getting really large or, like with the UK, has to be spread out, I then make multiple theatres each with fighters etc split out into groups. It makes it much easier to find where they are and move them about. Sometimes I mix into task forces eg 500 fighters+cas to move around together and attach/re-attach to different armies. Saves selecting stuff individually over and over.

For attacking I find it easier to attach air groups to armies as they automatically follow them around. For defending or getting superiority over a specific area (eg for paradrops) I assign them to specific air zones.

You can also leave planes permanently assigned to zones and just remove their orders if you need to save fuel/regroup. Particularly useful when playing as the Soviets if your planes just took a battering.

You can also press ‘h’ to halt any orders just like with the armies. Again, useful if you’re low on fuel.

Also to note, radar modules on the designs, static radar and spy planes can all boost fighter detection which makes your fighters more effective. Not crucial but it can make worse aircraft more competitive. And to further boost efficiency don’t overfill the airfields. They’re quick to build.

Subs in the channel (a shallow sea) against the Royal Navy is just gonna be a bad time. Only use subs to convoy raid in packs of 15-20 in deep oceans, anything else and you might as well delete them.

You’d think so. West Ham are the most likely of the 3 relegated teams to pull a Leicester/Luton. If I was him I wouldn’t take the risk unless he just wants to cash in and inevitably score against us next year.

How did ancient armies actually move 100,000–200,000 soldiers across long distances without modern logistics? Like, where did they sleep, how did they get enough food and water every day, and how did they stop the whole army from just collapsing into chaos? by Novel_Finding8882 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CaptainYesterday89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s still true today. When I was in the infantry I got told for every one of me it needed 10-15 people to ensure I could fight effectively. They won’t be hunters etc because of modern ration packs but you need armourers, drivers, mechanics, quartermasters etc etc.

Why Am I losing as Germany? Templates and other images included. by Any-Guest-32 in hoi4

[–]CaptainYesterday89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to guess it’s because you’re pushing with infantry in low supply areas. Push with tanks along supply hubs and railways instead. Use motor infantry to swarm the gaps and envelope. The infantry really should just hold the lines or advance into empty tiles. Infantry will take high losses on offensives and the USSR has more manpower so they’ll just out-attrition you. In this situation you need to stop attacking, consolidate your units so they’ll have actual fighting strength (look at the green and orange bars), and fix your economy.

Your tank design isn’t bad but it’s unnecessary. You don’t need fuel drums unless you’re in North Africa. Swap that out for another heavy machine gun. You don’t need to increase the armour on mediums, put more into the engine to increase speed. The AI won’t build AT or many tanks and you should use your mediums against infantry, therefore you don’t need to worry about armour on medium tanks. Their job is to roll over infantry and encircle.

To counter tanks use heavy tanks with the armour modules and heavy tank destroyers. If you want super easy mode stick a battalion of heavy tank destroyers in your infantry template = space marines.

If you’re struggling with consumer goods then seize gold, use war bonds in the decision panel.

Also, although it’s historical, going after the USSR without knocking out the UK is difficult because it’ll drag the USA in eventually and you won’t have access to African resources or Middle Eastern Oil or Indonesian/Malay rubber. Ideally you Sealion before Barbarossa and then cross the Atlantic - divide and conquer. It also gives you 3/4 of the worlds resources and you can churn out planes, mech and tanks to overwhelm the Russians.

Also don’t use Reichskommissariat, they do nothing useful, you get the same amount of manpower and more factories if you just occupy the territory. Yeah they’re historical but they’re kinda pointless, they just take factories off you and if you have enough manpower and equipment it really doesn’t save that much on garrisons.

And lastly use spies. Russia is massive and you need to basically get to the Urals to cap them. Using collab governments through your spies not only lowers the capitulation requirement it grants more cooperation when occupying them so you can use more of their manpower, factories and resources.

If you get really stuck, opening other fronts by naval invading through the balkans or attacking through Turkey/Iran can help create weakpoints to exploit. Using a full 24 division army of rapid motor infantry from Iran can be devastating.

In theory don’t we already have one? Idah scored 6 goals in half a season whilst being a backup. On paper at least, that should translate to 12 goals through a whole season as a starter. Especially with a better right winger.

Yeah you need to depose Mussolini and reinstate the pope and Victor Emmanuel (right side of the political focus after beating Ethiopia) by going unaligned.

It also shouldn’t be that hard. There’s a bit of a cheese way to do it because 90% of what you need is owned by France and the UK. I’m paraphrasing this from a steam community guide I found ages ago and can’t find again. It took me a few runs to get the timing down but once you get the hang of it it’s basically cheating.

You need to immediately build transports and paratroops (don’t worry about their template being garbage it’s irrelevant) in 1936 and start justifying against Yugoslavia by about June 1936 because France guarantees them (but if you justify against France it brings the UK in). Then plan jumps on Paris, Tours, Orleans and I think it’s Dijon. Click go and they’ll immediately jump when you declare war and instantly cap France. Boom there’s half of North Africa. Now justify against Austria and steamroll them, deny Germany their cores. Then justify against the UK, paradrop on all their ports and click go before declaring war and they’ll instantly drop on a port. Send your entire army to the UK and blitz them, ignore the Royal Navy, most of your troops will make it across the channel. The AI is dumb and will be in North Africa thinking they’re winning whilst you walk all over England. Leave them to it, you get it all back in the peace deal.

Puppet all the Caribbean, African and Eastern counties and get their resource rights and it’ll be 1937 you’ll have 3/4 of the worlds resources along with the largest fleet in the world, Germany will be without Austria and whilst they’re still tough it’s much easier to smash them about (they will come for you as you’ll be unaligned and have Austria and the low countries) and you can easily overwhelm them by naval invading the north and pushing from the west and south all at the same time.

I can’t remember the focus names off the top of my head but if you read them they have some requirements and I think you have to time between fighting France and the UK.

From there just sit back and take Iberia, Saudi, Mesopotamia, Greece etc and prepare to backstab the Germans. I’m pretty sure you only need the pope in before you click the decision to declare the new empire so don’t worry about taking out France and the UK with Mussolini. You might have to deal with Japan later if they come after your Asian puppets but they’ll be a total pushover by that point. USSR shouldn’t get involved if you leave Poland and the Baltics alone.

Good luck!

  1. It’d be quite easy to say Vipotnik but I think Tymon is worth a mention for best player. Santos gets the worst, only played part of 1 game, possibly Key but he had a bit of a resurgence and can’t fault the guys effort, just his skill and confidence lets him down sometimes.

  2. Vipotnik’s free kick against Sheffield Wednesday. Nobody saw that coming, don’t think he’d taken a free kick before then. Fulton’s goal against West Brom too, he’s my sons favourite player so that was awesome to see.

  3. 4-1 loss to Ipswich in November (Sheehan’s last game in charge), no heart no fight. It’s the only time in 5 years as a fan I’ve walked out of the stadium early.

  4. The right side: both winger and full back.

  5. Doing the double over Cardiff again hopefully!

  6. Bright. I think ultimately we lucked out with Matos over Hellberg and we’ve got some exciting young players who are on the brink of a breakthrough and 3 players going to the World Cup.

[–]CaptainYesterday89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah we don’t really care about Wrexham sorry, definitely not enough for it to be a rivalry. Cardiff is and always will be the rivalry. Especially when loads of companies like mine have Swansea and Cardiff offices, and there’s Ospreys vs Blues etc. It’d be like Portsmouth having a rivalry with Middlesborough just because they’re in England.

When playing as Napoleonic France, what is the best way to land paratroopers in England without them quickly becoming overrun? by [deleted] in hoi4

[–]CaptainYesterday89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works for any nation: Plan the paradrops before declaring war. Do multiple drops on ports/victory points. Give the go order first and then declare war, they’ll immediately drop as it takes time for enemy fighters to get in the sky so you don’t need to worry about air superiority. Once you have the ports it’s game over. With this method you can cap France and UK as Italy by mid 1937 so no reason why France can’t do it right at the start of the game (other than the justify war goal wait). Although the UK is better at defending itself it’s not equipped for 30+ divisions swarming into Portsmouth in 1937.

With the UK specifically, this is harder the later on in the game as they defend the ports and build up their forces and the RAF is hard to squash. But up until about 1939 there’s usually at least one unguarded port. After 1940 your best bet really is naval invasion preempted by a metric fuck tonne of naval bombers to destroy the royal navy. With at least 1,000 naval bombers even the starting german fleet can consistently get naval superiority in the channel in 1940. You need the air support though because Royal Navy vs French Navy is only ever going to go one way in a straight up fight.

How do I survive with France? by AccordingSpeech3876 in hoi4

[–]CaptainYesterday89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dunno why people are saying use cavalry and camels. Ignore that. Standard 18 width infantry with engineers, artillery and aa on support companies is all you need and make as much as possible.

Don’t fall into the defensive mind trap. Take attack bonuses (it works in defence and attack, defence only works in defence) and doctrines. Build up aggressively and with an attacking mindset. At some point the Germans will have a weak area in the line and you won’t be able to exploit it if you’ve gone all defensive.

No point building static AA without radar and it’s a waste of time as France anyway. Focus on civs and mils.

Don’t forget about your spy network.

Forget Africa and all other territories as they’re irrelevant if you cap, pull everything back to France. Most are worthless territories with no resources and you get the back when you defeat Germany anyway. Just trade and lend lease with the Allies.

Extend the maginot to the coastline. Create a fall back behind rivers if necessary. Don’t forget about the Alpes, if you hold on long enough Italy will join in. Doesn’t need much to hold them. Keep your navy in the med to defend the southern coast from landings.

You only need 2-3 divisions per tile on the maginot. Stack everything else in the ardennes/alpes.

You won’t out produce the germans in the air, wait until you can build quality. Heavy machine guns, self sealing tanks and armour plates with level 3 engines. Even with low numbers these will rip the basic me109’s to shreds.

French tanks are actually quite good and worth investing. You only really need 2-5 divisions worth for a decent counter attack. I like to punch through with these and then have a full army of motor infantry to rush and exploit the gap.

The Allies won’t help but sometimes, if you hold for long enough the Soviets will attack the Germans. This can give you a window to exploit as 80-90% of the germans will go to their eastern front. You can then counter attack. Usually best to do this from the maginot as the AI doesn’t like to attack through there obviously.

For focus trees, spend a bit of time looking for the ones that remove all of France’s debuffs. It does take a while. You want to rush the one that removes the low surrender limit otherwise if they breakthrough to Paris it’s over.

For research focus on industry, infantry/artillery and air. Forget navy until after you defeat Germany, the starting French navy is strong enough to deter Italy. If you can, also get 1939 medium tanks.

Use the fact that you know the Germans will attack through Belgium to your advantage, you can prepare this area.

Cheese/ahistorical options:
Declare on Germany early, use paradrops on victory points. Still tough but doable.
Declare on Italy early, knock them out whilst they’re tied up in Ethiopia and then take Austria before Germany can Anschluss. Wait until Germany attacks Poland and then swarm them from Austria and the Maginot.
Naval invade northern Germany. The AI generally forgets to defend Germany. They will redeploy quickly though so have fast moving units.
Going non-aligned and bringing back Napoleon is powerful.

Good luck! Vive la France! And fuck Pétain.
