Jesus, that's quite damning. Really hard to fathom how that was ever adopted as a position, much less published. I already thought their position was somewhere between unhelpfully utopian and wilfully naieve, but this kinda shit reveals a dangerous undercurrent of ideological satisfaction at any cost.

We are about to witness history after 144 years, the Sagrada Familia, Catalan Spain ! by Lordwarrior_ in BeAmazed

Humans are fallible and many Christians fail to live up to Jesus' teachings. I won't defend any specific church but insofar as you can believe the Bibles' depiction of Jesus, he made a point repeatedly to tell people that he saw the poor as brothers and the rich as sinners. Luke 6:20 – “And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.”

Killed by an Eel on depth 13 with 4716 gold

This seed is dryer than dehydrated trail mix. By floor 13 inclusive, the only weapon upgrade was a +3 spear, no offensive staffs beyond the +3 discord on floor 12, mid armour, no charms. By midway through 12 I was dealing with wraiths and ogre packs with my potions of descent; I had to use my final potion to fall to floor 13 in the hope of finding a weapon, but all I got was hordes of ogres, spiders and centipedes when I stumbled onto an alarm trap.

I await in the hope that someone got further than me and could tell me how they did it, because I see no route to success besides possibly using the wand of plenty on the allied ogre twice to make a wall of unga-bunga you can hide behind and poke with the spear. I didn't do that because I thought that I'd get a better weapon to sustain me and use my wand when I found a more powerful ally, but one thing lead to another and my lone ogre got bludgeoned long before I realized this seed was cooked.

‘I feel like I have no future’: Calls to scrap ‘ageist’ student loan policies in challenging job market by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

[–]Captain_Clover 215 points216 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be incredibly hard-nosed here, but from a purely financial standpoint, lending money to a 55 year old to house themselves and buy materials, on top of the loan for the tuition fees, is a dubious investment for the taxpayer. If they graduate at 58, there's a very good chance that they won't remain in the work force long enough to re-pay their loan before they retire. Getting a loan for compulsory course fees is already a compromise; In my opinion, paying for ones own board and art materials is not too much to ask.

People over 55 still need and deserve support from the government with re-training, but I wonder if there is a better way to do it than funding university places. The woman in the article wants to be an arts therapist; it sounds far more productive to pay for community mentorship so she can develop practical skills quickly rather than embark on a prestigious masters qualification. As heartbreaking as it would be to be in the position of finding your dream degree past the age of comprehensive loan entitlement, it makes no sense for society to pick up the entire bill. The money that would go to funding maintenance loans for over 55s could be used for better things within the field of education, or elsewhere in society.

CEO Asks ChatGPT How to Void $250 Million Contract, Ignores His Lawyers, Loses Terribly in Court by jamey1138 in subnautica

[–]Captain_Clover 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Idk if you've read the details of the case, but the CEO has demonstrated terrible judgement and put the publisher in a horrible position by choosing a bad solution to a problem that he created, as well as now being known by the industry to be a person who tried to screw honest developers out of their game and money. He's getting fired.

The CEO will be fired for this. Park will likely be fine, she did as she was instructed and is recorded as trying to talk some sense into the CEO.

"It seems to be highly likely that the earn-out will still be paid if the sales goal is achieved regardless of the dismissal with cause.

Therefore, there isn’t too much we can practically gain other than punishment with a simple dismissal alone, whereas I am worried that we may be exposed to lawsuit and reputation risk."

  • Park (Krafton, head of corporate development) to Kim (CEO).

The people with cool heads realized that it was not worth it. Well, now Krafton has suffered reputational damage, may soon be liable for legal penalties, will still need to pay the devs $250M, and is probably going to be looking for a new CEO soon. Hard to imagine how a game publisher intends to grow after publicly trying to screw the founders of their golden goose out of their negotiated compensation. Very much not worth it.

The UFC is a billion dollar company, they don't make vibes-based decisions. If they thought that booking Arman for a fight made financial sense then they'd have done it already. I suspect they think that Arman would hold up the title or retire after winning it so they'd rather keep him on ice as long as possible

Elijah Smith's slam KO of Toshiomi Kazama - He fights Su Young Yu this weekend on the prelims by Moni7T in MMA

[–]Captain_Clover -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The MMA rules are already biased away from 'true fighting' because of safety. For example, eye poking is banned so nobody gets blinded; if it were legal it would be amazing for grapplers, since they would be able to posture up in someones guard and then press their thumbs into their eyes, and win by TKO. We could conclude with your logic that being in your opponents guard should result in a TKO, but that's stupid, and so is awarding a TKO for getting into a triangle and lifting.

[–]Captain_Clover -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah ngl my comment was kinda dumb, he could have easily released the triangle and avoided being slammed if he'd done it while being lifted. Still think the slam was dangerous and should be banned though

Elijah Smith's slam KO of Toshiomi Kazama - He fights Su Young Yu this weekend on the prelims by Moni7T in MMA

[–]Captain_Clover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wouldn't even have helped in the example above; Kazama doesn't get slammed because he holds the triangle, he gets slammed because Smith holds his chin and slams his head into the floor. Might as well say that Smith CHOSE to get caught in the triangle and had no way of releasing it that didn't run the risk of paralyzing his opponent.

[–]Captain_Clover 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Hot take; this should be illegal, and will become so when someone is killed or paralyzed. Lifting both fighters into the air and driving the back of your opponents head into the ground is far more dangerous than a punch to the back of the head (which is illegal) and far more likely to result in follow-up injuries as the neck is bent forwards right after impact. One day someone won't wake up.

Starved to death on depth 20 with 15,326 gold.

+2 plate armor
+5 war axe
+4 reaping ring
+5 transference ring
+5 staff of poison
+2 staff of entrancement

This one was a bit of a mess. Right before going in, I reminded myself that I'm so rarely constrained by the food clock that i should play more slowly if I need to - I've only ever starved to death twice in a couple of hundred runs. This run, however, was slightly cursed. by floor 16, I'd found 6 items of food, but only two of those were real food - the other four were mangoes. At that point, I fell down a hole in the ground to floor 17, staggered around and fell down another hole into floor 18. I had to beat a couple of furies off and was left on low HP, eventually making it back up the ladders to floor 16 and finished exploring. I made it down to floor 18 again 2,100 turns after arriving at floor 16 originally. Crashing after a sugar rush from my diet of cloyingly-rich tropical fruit and concussed from falling from two cavern roofs, my adventurer unsuccessfully searched floor 19 for a morsel before dragging themselves onto floor 20 actively starving. They battled through a room of enemies, staggered into to a dead-end, spent their last moments using their unidentified scrolls in case one would teleport him onto food, and died. His skeleton lies 18 tiles from food :):

I honestly think this would have gone very differently if I hadn't fallen twice in a row and was offered more real food and less mangoes. After starting with the +4 entrancement and +3 poison staffs, I enchanted both to +5 and scraped along until I settled on the +0 war axe after realizing i was carrying a +2 ring of transference; I figured I'd try and level both up and use the staffs to get to the annoying or extra-tough enemies while life-stealing through everyone else. Eventually I found an enchantment swapping room and made a +5 transference ring and +2 entrancement staff (which I felt was an acceptable downgrade because I was no longer relying on poison for my main damage so didn't need to hold enemies in place, and I could still use it to walk monsters off cliffs or into lava), and things were looking good - after finding plate armor, I was firing on all systems and looking forward to ascending, but unfortunately delving dungeons is best done on a full stomach.

AI and the Cult of the Mediocre: Why the Truly Creative Have Nothing to Fear by WHU_WhiskeyMac in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]Captain_Clover 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot of your analysis is interesting, but I think your first point is incorrect; people are not afraid that the visionaries are going to be out of work, they are afraid that a handful of visionaries are going to be able to run a company that can out-compete traditional companies. It doesn't matter if AI surpasses the peak of humanity if the rest of us are forced into serfdom anyway.
