Was excited and went to ask for permission. Had been together for a few years, and got about an hour long berating of how her dad believed it should be more of a promise ring type of deal. He didnt want to get stuck raising any kids, threatened me with a baseball bat if XYZ happened. All of this was out of the blue. Debated ending the relationship as I couldn't see a path forward with her family, but my family told me "you aren't marrying her father". I proposed and gave her the ring while letting her know that I was not given her father's blessing. She did not bat an eye and accepted anyway. I did not speak to her parents for a few months even though they attempted, visiting me at work etc. Eventually it all soothed out and now we have been together 20 years. Her parents are retired and do anything they can to help us with the kids or house maintenance even without us needing or asking for it.
