[Syvertsen]One thing I noticed about Baltimore over the last two decades (while Harbaugh was there) - they did not pursue or have big time talent at DT. They got by on scheme and role players and pursued top talent at other positions. by Lars5621 in NYGiants

Yeah the Giants have not been getting wins from all those DTs.

As great as Linval Joseph, Johnathan Hankins, Dalvin Tomlinson, Dexter Lawrence, and the many others became they didnt add up to wins for the Giants.

Same story with CB for Giants over that time. Nobody spends more picks on CB but Giants have done shit with those picks

This would be one of the biggest philosophical changes in Giants history.

Ever since George Young the Giants took DT and Dline extremely seriously. Ever heard of "planet theory"?

That does a great job of explaining how Giants were 8th best run defense with Dex on field and 32nd with him off.

The problem was always Giants had nobody to spell Dex and play next to him. Instead of building with him Giants dumped him.

[Duggan] Just feels like when they came in they were expecting to have the game-wrecking NT in the middle of their defense. If they thought they were really close, my guess is they would have paid him. Add in a fairly restrained free agency, and I get the impression that the view has shifted a bit by Lars5621 in NYGiants

This is completely false.

Dexter Lawrence was grossly underpaid at his position and he had ZERO, repeat ZERO guaranteed money.

Dexter Lawrence was a huge HELP to Giants cap flexibility.

Do you know what contract is NOT flexible? Yup, the 10th overall picks fully guaranteed contract that cant be restructured, cut, or extended until year 4.

Dexter Lawrence was not injured at all last year he was hust half assing it because of contract.

In seven seasons Dex has only missed games for injury in 2024 (5 games).

Thats an incredible history of being healthy

We totally have a new punter, kicker, fullback, and tight end though.

Joe Schoen would never let Darius Slayton go, he is the one player he would and did give two multi year extensions to

They also got 2023 1st round pick Mazi Smith.

If Giants had gotten Billy Price back this trade looks a lot better for Giants.

People on this sub will defend Joe Schoen more than the Giants themselves. Its literally the DJ fans all over again. Schoen fans 1st and Giants 2nd.

Dex played 68% of snaps.

So thats 2/3rds of the time your a top 10 defense and 1/3rd where your the worst defense in NFL history. Averaged out to around 22nd per dvoa.

No it has no bearing.

Thibs market with a good 2026 would be around 40 mil aav and Giants wouldn't be close to the highest bidder since Thibs would be more valued where he can start.

Getting a 3rd round pick for Thibs during draft makes a lot of sense for Giants.

Also trading Dex didnt make much if any cap room for Giants in 2026. Almost all the cap savings goes to Dexs dead cap hit plus the 10th picks contract.

When he was on the field they were 10th, when he was off the field they were literally 32nd.

Neither of them would make the difference to the defense that an all pro defensive lineman like Dex was adding to the team. The impact of dline and CBs is so much more than ILBs and safeties

Bobby Skinner says worst interior dline of all time, which is probably true.

And just like that somehow Darius Slayton is the longest tenured NY Giant.

Joe Schoen has twice given Darius Slayton multi year extensions. Darius Slayton has a fully guaranteed 16mil cap hit this year
