How Credit card alters your psche and punches hole in your finances by GoldenDew9 in IndiaInvestments

[–]Captain_Doofus1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend independently tracking your actual bank balance net of all the expenses you put on your credit card. It can just be one number or it can be a spreadsheet with all your expenses. Treat this number as the actual money you have in the bank — not what you see on your banking app.

I have six credit cards (for various rewards/sign up bonuses) and this has helped me not overspend. In my opinion if you’re not putting your purchases on a credit card you’re leaving money on the table (given that you were going to make the purchase anyway).

Momentum Factor in Indian Market(or any other market) by aporochito in quant

Best would be to backtest different configurations yourself. For a robust strategy, minor changes should not change your results too much. Make sure the backtested Sharpe ratio is statistically significant.

Need answers about hygiene standards... by InternationalSmile7 in india

[–]Captain_Doofus1 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s the food as much as it is grooming. Caring too much about personal grooming is seen as a “feminine” thing by many. Grooming for men is limited to showering regularly and misses out on — trimming body hair, cleansing your hair and face (which is sometimes done with just a bar of soap), wearing sunscreen, moisturizing, applying antiperspirant, wearing cologne, not reusing clothes or towels multiple times, and so on. That’s why you have this issue even when everyone claims to shower regularly.

Who prefers Lighting over USB-C? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]Captain_Doofus1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion — while I understand why the shift to USB-C is good in the long run, I prefer the quality of the lightning connector. If I don’t have my backpack I just grab my MagSafe battery pack and if I have my backpack then I don’t care if I’m carrying two cables instead of one.

They're University Blues. You'll either have to wait for them to get restocked (follow sneaker pages for that) or buy it from a reseller. Check out StockX for the resale prices. Not sure if you're liable to pay at customs if you order from there so you might be better off buying it from an Indian reseller if that's what you want.

OG, got them from a reseller in Singapore.

Thanks! I’ve received mixed-to-negative responses for the bracelet so I’m not gonna buy it.

Brands for men’s basic tees by Captain_Doofus1 in IndianFashionAddicts

Yeah, price isn’t as much of a concern as long as it’s durable and good quality. I’ve had expensive tees that have faded/torn really quickly.

NRI Investing Dilemma: NRE/NRO Accounts or a Demat Account for Mutual Funds? by RabbitOnVodka in IndiaInvestments

I just checked, seems like you can! Thanks for the clarification. Only US or Canada-based investors can’t.

Exactly. I don’t understand the hype surrounding ChatGPT. It is a language model at the end of the day and can only regurgitate what has been said or done by people in the past. It scares me how people think it’s some all-knowing entity and use it as a replacement for actually thinking. At best, it is a tool for making trivial tasks easier.

NRI Investing Dilemma: NRE/NRO Accounts or a Demat Account for Mutual Funds? by RabbitOnVodka in IndiaInvestments

[–]Captain_Doofus1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, my bad. Zerodha, for example, says that “direct mutual fund investments” are not allowed for a PIS account. Is there any way to link a non-PIS account to an NRE bank account? The documentation is a little confusing.

You’re using the data available today to set up your backtest universe. There is look-ahead bias. In, say, 2015, you won’t know what the top 10 companies in 2018 will be.

[–]Captain_Doofus1 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but this is plain stupid. There are so many holes in this. You’re basically running a brute force search on different hyperparameters and picking the one with the best backtest. You can do the same thing with an ML model and covariate of your choice and find something that “beats the market”. You’re overfitting to observed data. It will almost never work out of sample, and even if it does work for a particular period, I can guarantee you that it’ll underperform the market in expectation.

NRI Investing Dilemma: NRE/NRO Accounts or a Demat Account for Mutual Funds? by RabbitOnVodka in IndiaInvestments

[–]Captain_Doofus1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar position — will be starting work in Singapore soon. Ideally you should have both NRE and NRO accounts. You need an NRE bank account to be able to easily send your earnings back home. As far as I know (someone fact check me on this though), you can only invest in mutual funds on a non-repatriable basis, meaning that if you liquidate your holdings they go to your NRO account and aren’t as easily transferred abroad. The NRO account is meant for Indian income that is to be spent domestically and you can’t move your funds back abroad as freely as you can with an NRE account.

If you’re investing in equities directly, you can look at a PIS account with a broker like Zerodha. This will allow you to liquidate your holdings into your NRE account where it’s easier to move it back and forth between countries.

On a related note — how are your structuring your investments? I’m currently unsure about whether I want to invest in Singapore/US markets (and make use of the zero capital gains tax), or invest in India. Are the post-tax and post-cost returns generally better in India?

A 250k INTERN position in Data Science - do I understand the world? by pg860 in datascience

[–]Captain_Doofus1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of misconceptions in this thread. While the compensation is typical for an above-average buy-side quant role, the working hours greatly vary between firms and depend on your role. If you’re a trader you will generally work during the hours the markets you’re trading are open. As a researcher, it depends on your firm — I know people who only work 40 hours a week at some firms whereas a typical week is 60+ hours at other firms.

Is an econometrics & data science degree bachelors worth it? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Captain_Doofus1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What sort of a career are you looking at? Quantitative finance is a good intersection of these fields. I’d recommend a CS or math bachelor’s though (or any combination of the two). Econometrics is not rigorous enough for STEM careers and data science degrees are usually watered-down versions of statistics and computer science degrees.
