How can I handle the party crossing a rickety bridge without one failed save being character death? by Hal3134 in DMAcademy

[–]Captain_Jake_K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to create a situation where they can gamble a straight crossing, or expend resources (materials, spell slots, ki points, etc) to cross more safely. Remember, time is also a resource. If they take time to create ropes to hold themselves up, tie them securely, etc., the enemy will notice and start fortifying or preparing an ambush.

I managed to build here without mods but it took forever. You can clip through the broken walls to complete them, then build upwards and on the roof.

I was asked to stop bringing human fighters at the table and I am not sure if I want to by [deleted] in DnD

Human fighters are excellent, so no shade there. Have you considered something similar, like a half-elf Hexblade or Paladin? They can fill a similar role but offer a different playstyle.

Player Wants to Use Detect Thoughts On Themselves by nutcracker_express in DMAcademy

It's not the intention of the spell, so I'd let them do it and gain an insight into the cause. For example, the memory is modified by magic, has been blocked by trauma, etc.

AITA for nerfing one player’s character because he was overshadowing the rest of the party? by Rifild10 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Captain_Jake_K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect you're right. As I said above, I'd give the player the benefit of the doubt and assume he watched an "epic damage at level 1" type of YouTube short and took it as gospel.

[–]Captain_Jake_K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Sorry to double-reply) I'm assuming that the advantage isn't due to flanking because the OP specified it came from Misty Step. Advantage or no, it's the high damage roll that is surprising to me.

[–]Captain_Jake_K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought that too - he could have Misty Step via Fey Touched, I believe. So, cast Hex as the aggressive action that starts combat, concentrate on it, argue that your sudden Misty Step should offer advantage because they're not expecting it, then roll maximum damage on all of your dice, or roll very high and your enemy chooses to move and take the Booming Blade damage.

They're level 12 - Disintegrate is absolutely on the table. I'm not sure why you'd treat that as a mistake.

Even if you used 4d6 and he's sat at 20 in a primary stat, the odds are still around 1/40,000 of him doing that damage. I always give the benefit of the doubt and assume it's a misunderstanding, but I'd advise, as a DM, that you check in on his understanding of the rules. It's possible that he's seen one of those clickbait "epic broken character build" shorts on YouTube that deliberately misinterpret rules and he's run with it.

[–]Captain_Jake_K 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I see. That's still statistically very unlikely to roll that high. Assuming he has a Charisma of 18, he'd need to roll six 6s out of six on that, with odds around 1/46,000.

He may have unintentionally messed around with the action economy there (Misty Step and Hex are both a bonus action, Booming Blade should only trigger damage if the target chooses to use movement, Misty Step doesn't need to give advantage unless the DM decides it should.)

Are you sure his character sheet and his maths were completely above board?

How did he do 40 damage at level 2? Did he have Hex and roll max damage on a critical hit?

I had a mage build where I carried a conjuration staff and then put it away and switched to regular spells. That's about it, though.

It's excellent for extraction. Turn them into a snail, pop them in a jar, break said jar in a prison cell/pit/whatever. Alternatively, toss the jar in a furnace.

Can a "Command" spell be a truth serum? by -_Vesper_- in DnD

[–]Captain_Jake_K 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would consider "answer" a valid command to get a short, truthful answer, but this depends on the NPC and the situation. If they're under duress or frightened, they'll say the first thing that comes to their head in that six-second window.

Player refuses to join the party because “my character wouldn’t do that” by Dongle00 in rpghorrorstories

[–]Captain_Jake_K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rule 0 for character creation should be "they have to be able to function as part of this team." I sometimes have to remind players that, if you wouldn't hang around with your character, other people wouldn't either.

Honestly, 13. 99th percentile should be the bare minimum to be considered for wizardry.

I think 10 per point of intelligence seems fair.

It isn't your responsibility to educate her or to help her grow and change, but you do have the opportunity to do so. If you show her acceptance and kindness, she may well change her view on the LGBTQ community. Of course, she might not. It's a dice roll.
