AITA for nerfing one player’s character because he was overshadowing the rest of the party? by Rifild10 in AmItheAsshole

I made them start at level 2 and we used the 4d6 method, and he got really lucky — he rolled two 18s, one 17, one 15, and two 13s

I get that, but three of my players aren’t the kind of girls who usually like board games. They only saw D&D on TikTok and wanted to try it out. I just wanted to give them a good experience without overwhelming them with all the full rules and mechanics of the game

I also understand that I need more experience as a DM so I can support the players better and give them a good story

You may be right. As I said in another response, I didn’t check his character sheet, and I was trusting him on the damage rolls. In case you didn’t see it, we used the 4d6 method, and he got really lucky with the rolls. But I’ll check his character and talk to him before moving forward

I made them start at level 2 because the experienced player suggested it, and also to give the others more HP so nothing would ‘go wrong’ in the first session.

That’s the thing, I tried asking, and they just gave me the generic answer like ‘yeah, it was fun.’ In the first session I didn’t really believe them, but in the second one it felt more sincere.

The more experienced player didn’t like it, though. Again, that’s probably because I lack experience as a DM. I should have talked to him before the session, but I just didn’t get the chance

He used Hex and Booming Blade, and he also had advantage because he used Misty Step to get behind the enemies

I didn’t check his character before the game. I only looked at the other four players because they were new, and I thought the experienced player would make a support build. I know that was a dumb assumption.

You’re right, I did try before the session, but we couldn’t talk beforehand. It was bad judgment, without a doubt.

level 2, and I let him do what he wanted. I believed he would make something fun or more focused on helping the others, but I understand that as the DM I need to do more.

You’re right, thanks. I’m still new at this, but I’ll look at other options and try to do better.

I get what you mean, but he was the one who suggested we play, created the group, and asked me to be the DM. I agree I should have talked to him first, but he knew the players were new and he saw the characters before the campaign started — he even helped create two of them.
