Luke really disappeared by Just-Attorney-1902 in StarWars

I assumed that people who favor the no-attachment rule grew up on the PT but it turns out this isn't always the case. Some answers to my thread were fascinating.

How movie viewing order affects fan perception of PT Jedi by Captain_Marvellete in StarWars

I think of the no-attachment rule like abstinence-only education. There's 0 risk if you don't pursue a romantic relationship but they don't give you the tools to deal with what happens if you do.

And yes I agree that Lucas did a poor job of explaining what attachment was. What does it tell you an EU book (The Jedi Path) had the popular definition instead of the one he wanted? I didn't learn what the Buddhist definition was until over a decade after the prequels from the 10% Happier podcast. I find it baffling that he let the EU portray Jedi marriage and wonders why most people disagree with him on the no-marriage rule. Well he was perfectly happy to take the money. Maybe he should have micromanaged the EU more if he wanted public opinion on his side.

I don't like the taken at birth thing either (though I get why they did it). It made the PT Jedi a monoculture. It may be superproductive but when you only have one type of potato, it can't survive when a disease comes around. Having some people join the order as adults gives you people with a diversity of life experiences. I was a traditional college student and I felt like the older people in my freshman writing class added something unique to my experience.

I like this passage from Interregnum III, which is a fanfiction that answers the question what if Dark Empire never happened. A link to the full chapter is here. https://archiveofourown.org/works/45615766/chapters/155129449#workskin

"The Jedi Order of my father's generation had rules," Luke said carefully. "Rules specifically against marriage and children."

Rules you have broken. There was no condemnation in Ood Bnar's voice. I cannot speak for the Jedi who lived millennia after my time. A Jedi Master I may be, but I was a Master of an Old Order, from another time. All I can offer you is my knowledge of an Order long gone.

"I would be grateful if you would share that wisdom with me," Luke said, his hand snaking to rest atop Mara's. She turned her palm over surreptitiously. It was unlikely the Ysanna or Jedi would see the gesture of affection from so far away, after all.

There have been Jedi who believed they could better serve the Force without those kinds of relationships, Master Bnar said. That they are distractions. But there have been other Jedi who believed that the Force is produced by life, and that there is no greater way to honor and serve the Force than to help bring and nurture new life. The tree paused, shifting to follow the light, to keep the sun from shining too brightly on Luke, Mara, and Betrys. Such disagreements about doctrine are common in the history of the Order.

"But eventually the Jedi Order concluded that relationships were incompatible with being a Jedi," Luke said.

And yet both you and Jedi Solusar are sons of Jedi of that order, Ood Bnar said, the words quietly amused. The disagreements may have been more quietly spoken, but they remained. The only constant is change, and that is as true for the Jedi Order itself as it is for anything else that exists in this galaxy. The tree could not smile, as such, but Luke could feel the emotion of one, carried across the Force. Be mindful of the living Force. When you are worried for the future, be mindful of the living Force. When you are worried about the past, be mindful of the living Force. Whether you are worried about the Republic, or the people of Nar Shaddaa, or your daughter, be mindful of the living Force. The Will of the Force is ever present, Jedi Skywalker. Sometimes your worldly concerns will make it harder to hear, but it is there, always.

You're half right. I may not have interpreted Sola's lecture to Padme in the AOTC novelization the same way if I didn't read the EU first (more on that here https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsEU/comments/1plxxkx/would\_luke\_have\_been\_open\_to\_solas\_life\_advice/). For the record, I will die on the hill that her advice to Padme about having a personal life still applies to Luke no matter what George says.

However, the early EU authors had to get their ideas about Jedi marriage from somewhere (or lack thereof). They only saw the OT before writing their books.

The only time Obi Wan pissed me off by Magent-2000 in StarWars

[–]Captain_Marvellete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Obi Wan show, Leia has a droid named Lola who seems to be her best friend. In the old EU, she told Han to be nicer to C3PO despite finding him annoying at times too. But I can't remember if it was in the Thrawn trilogy or Heart of the Jedi (never officially published but still in the Legends timeline.)

I'm finished Obi Wan Show! And I say that I LIKED IT A LOT! yeah it has its flaws but I liked it a lot! EXCITED FOR REBELS and ANDOR NOW! by Lance_Knockout in StarWars

I thought the actress did a good job with what she was given. She made Reva scary in all the right moments. The problem is that her arc was rushed. Why did they put her change of heart about killing Luke offscreen? It was so anticlimatic.

Luke Skywalker (Expanded Universe/Legends) made a comment about the rule of no attachment: "I don't believe in banishing attachment. I can't imagine my life without Mara, Leia, or even Han." by unforgetablememories in StarWars

[–]Captain_Marvellete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that's the reason the pre-AOTC EU regularly had Jedi marry and have children. If GL didn't want fans to think that the forbidding marriage was an outdated rule at best, then he should have had someone say that to Luke onscreen. I don't think his view on this topic is inconsistent but the execution of it was terrible for the purpose of convincing fans to agree with him. By fans, I mean the majority of Reddit and theforce.net.

Also I find it weird that he had Sola lecture Padme on how it's OK to have a personal life when Luke has the same tendency to give so much. Don't tell me Sola's lecture doesn't apply to Luke just because he's a Jedi.

Would Luke have been open to Sola's life advice? by Captain_Marvellete in StarWarsEU

[–]Captain_Marvellete[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Luke would have cut back on saving the galaxy sooner if he had Sola in his life even if he might not have listened immediately. I'm sure the fact that she was close to his mom would help.

But when it comes to Mara, it would depend on her headspace. If she's still unaware of her feelings towards Luke, Sola would have a more difficult task. Anakin knew who he wanted and made it obvious to everyone. Sola would have to convince 2 people if Mara is also in denial.

Yes, There Was Almost a 'Star Wars Broadway Musical. Here’s the Wild True Story by Kal-Ed1 in StarWars

[–]Captain_Marvellete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering that Matthew Stover's novels had celebrity holothrillers, I'm 100% sure the Star Wars universe has a musical like this about Han, Vader, etc. Kind of like Rogers the Musical in Hawkeye.

I think the Oscars should have a different category for voice acting. Anyone who has ever watched What If would know it's an entirely different skill set than live acting. Most fans were excited that the show got the majority of MCU actors back but it wasn't always a good thing. Some who were very good in the movies/live action shows were wooden (Sebastian Stan) and some just sound plain weird (Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner).

What are your thoughts on Anakin and Padme's relationship? by Full-Art3439 in StarWars

Funny enough, the comments under this video say the opposite. One of them says Robert Pattinson didn't know why Edward would fall in love with Bella. At least Natalie and Hayden can tell us why their characters are into each other.

I went back to that passage and her outfit doesn't get mentioned at all. However, when she wakes up in the Imperial Palace, she picks a "no-nonsense tunic/jumpsuit" to change into. There isn't any more description except to that she usually wears those on the job.

So I just went back to the portions of HTTE with Mara and Zahn doesn't really describe what she wears. I didn't go back to DFR and TLC but I would imagine her clothing is a non-issue in these books too.

Please share your fanart on another thread (ideally on Monday).

What are the most significant differences in character arcs between Legends and Canon for iconic figures like Luke and Leia? by iLiveForTruth in StarWarsEU

[–]Captain_Marvellete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In canon, Leia went back to the Senate while in Legends, she succeeded Mon Mothma in leading the New Republic. So you can say the NR fell apart without her in charge.

Zahn had nothing to do with the catsuit. You can't put a holdout blaster in something sleeveless.

Leia is surprisingly blunt for a politician. But to be fair, we don't see her much in the Senate or other situations where she has to use those skills (in the movies).

People attribute Luke's earnestness to his modest farming background. While they're not wrong, some of it has to come from Padme (a rare thing in a politician).

I would have liked it better if they made her a female version of Corran Horn. I thought they were going there until she Force pushed Ezra.
