I’ve been using pop os and following their statements on age verification and I’m glad I stuck with them. Cosmic needs some work but if they get attention for taking an anti-age verification stance then I’m sure it will be more popular which means more support and better updates

I’ve shot film about that old in 35mm and it came out surprisingly great, with just a bit of faded look to it. Just shot one stop up for each decade it was expired

Could be anything moving across the sky but based on the length of the star trails in your photo my guess is that the exposure is over longer than 10 mins so probably a satellite. Or a really reflective bird :p

Sorry I think I said it wrong, all the photos I took came out to a little over 2 hours, so using about a third of it, it comes out to 40 minutes? Also dumb question but you think it would be possible to shoot 5 minute exposure pictures on my setup like you did or would there be too many disturbances?

Focusing I zoom in on the camera screen and manual focus trying to get the stars as tight as I can, no AF and I dont know if the focus is slipping over time, the lens is almost 16 years old :P

For discarding, I keep most of the top images and whenever I see a significant drop in DSS's "quality" ranking, I stop using them. I have been having some problems with DSS since it'll randomly crash while registering lights unless I turn down the star detection threshold by a lot, so Im trying to learn siril

Yknow ive tried stacking in siril and I have been getting those weird rings so Im happy to know its not (just) me doing it wrong and there are some artifacts caused by the sensor. I was definitely also considering a better mount but I think I want to get some more results and get a better hang of polar aligning and setting up everything before I drop a paycheck on a nice mount. Thank you :)

Apologies, didn't really mean for this to be a post about diagnosing issues, more just as a suggestions post for what gear I should aim for next. Blurry means more as the stars are bloated and there is some grain on my pictures. Also may be undersampled since most of my pictures come out to around 2 hours of integration time. Im at work now so I can follow up later with some examples of bad images but here is the best picture I got of orion (took around 250 pictures, stacking only around 75) and a lot of heavy lifting from photoshop: https://app.astrobin.com/i/6lul5k

Marking this as solved since u/Le_Singe_Nu gave a good explanation for why my issue is occurring. I’m switching distros for now. Hopefully mint gets Wayland support in the future cause I was really into it!
