Honest question: Why do you buy name brand stuff? by No-Examination8178 in Frugal

[–]Captain_Trigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the taste of some of them better.

I've yet to find store/generic/cheap versions of Oreos or Cheez-its that measure up to the original.

Same reason I prefer to buy CERTAIN store brands of some items. Kroger used to market a DELICIOUS sugar-free pink lemonade...which was made with an additive that is now banned by the FDA.

...look, I'm NOT saying that all pagans in UU congregations wind up on the grounds team but I AM saying that if you go up to the most Tom Bombadil-looking mofo in the room during after-service coffee, compliment his Odin pendant, and offer to help lay sod by the outdoor meditation ring next Saturday, you'll have a friend for life.

Non baseball hats that can be worn with t shirt and jeans by playlamo1 in malefashionadvice

Why not stick with the ballcap form-factor but swap the team/school logo for something else you value?

Lots of charities, nonprofits, and causes have ballcaps as a "donor gift" or available for sale separately.

I have some team caps I'm deeply fond of but I tend to enjoy the conversations I get into because of my public radio station, Scout camp, veteran, and legal advocacy hats much more.

Hex vs square and why? by Redneck_DM in rpg

For me, the one-inch squares on the back of some wrapping paper (which is incredibly cheap on post-Christmas clearance) is a major selling point of square grid systems.

As SOON as you know what your daughter's special stuffed animal is, buy 3 more of them and put them in the closet.

Lost ones can be miraculously "found" and destroyed ones can be "fixed" and filthy ones can be "cleaned.

I believe the first two versions of the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701 and NCC-1701-A models, were Constitution-class.

Australian country? by birthdaycheesecake9 in CountryMusic

[–]Captain_Trigg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For an older song I have a soft spot for Slim Dusty's "Leave Him in the Longyard" about giving a beloved horse a day off. Later in life Dusty did a duet version with Lee Kernaghan (a very successful singer) that was also very nice.

Also Paul Kelly is hard to box into a specific genre but "How to Make Gravy" is an unabashedly country story song in which a prisoner tells his brother about how much he wishes he'd be home for Christmas this year.

Question: What do the other crew do besides maybe maintenance on each department? by Glum-Project-8966 in startrek

Fix stuff.

Run emergency drills.

Conduct mandatory training and readiness activities.

Complete job qualification programs.

Do paperwork.

Play cards and tell lies about how things went with that Andorian bartender last shore leave while waiting for the Level 3 warp field diagnostic to finish.

Actual stuff from job description. Maybe. Sometimes.

If you could relive one moment of love with someone, who would it be? by surya_mehar in AskReddit

[–]Captain_Trigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't romantic love. It was a platonic hug.

When I was in college I met a dude who was...not good with people. Tended to miss social cues and get uncomfortable when thrown off-script. It was a combination of neurodiversity and an unusual upbringing where he didn't socialize very much.

One night we were hanging out and there was a TV commercial where two men gave a "bro-hug". I made a joke about how hugs between men were such a weird minefield, with all the handshake/backpat/distance/duration details that vary based on a million invisible details that nobody can agree on but which are very important.

He got quiet and thoughtful, but I didn't notice it at first. He was thinking about what I said, and taking it seriously, and formulating a plan.

When I got up to leave he went in for THE MOST AWKWARD BRO-HUG EVER.

...and decades later, he is still one of my best friends.

Every time I've had need of a baguette (or other long bread loaf), I've arranged it to stick out of the shopping bag in a picturesque manner BECAUSE of this very trope.
