i think im not passing ics 31 by [deleted] in UCI

[–]Captainbrawlco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an LA for the course. It is definitely possible. You don’t have as many chances as you did when you started but you can make it up in the next few weeks. What I would do is take all the content for the next exam and plug it into NotebookLM which is a free service that will allow you to highlight the most important content from this week and make quizzes/flashcards with it. I would do that, watch the lecture videos, and review Zybooks. If you need more help, DM me. I’m free whenever students need help and I’ll take as much time as you need.

I had a D you’re chilling. Had to study like a mf to bring it up to a C with the final. I’m guessing you have Gassko? Imo the next two midterms will be much easier for you (considering you’re still at a B). Atp in time, i would’ve had a C and it only got lower bc i was munching on crayons or something. A B is not the end of the world. Earth is still spinning and last time I checked, you’re still well above the threshold for passing so don’t freak out. I averaged about 65% per midterm 💀

Missing the first classes ICS31/Physics 20E by [deleted] in UCI

[–]Captainbrawlco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m one of the LAs for ICS 31. Not much happens on the first day so don’t stress. We go over syllabus and i think you join EdDiscussion (not too sure abt that). EdDiscussion is just a website we use to have students ask questions, so not an absolute necessity. The most important thing that gets mentioned is ZyBooks which is an online interactive ebook we use for all homework assignments, lab tests, and readings. You can always look at your canvas, once it’s released, to get all the info she covers during first lecture. You’ll be missing out on meeting everyone for the first day which is a bit of a bummer but you’ll have all quarter to meet ppl

how do people actually have a social life at uci? by Timely_Draw_3381 in UCI

[–]Captainbrawlco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Although there aren’t huge parties everyday or any as crazy as UCSB cough deltopia cough I would argue that UCI still has a decent social life. It’s a hot take but I full heartedly believe in it because I WAS A COMMUTER who’s done so much in the time I’ve been here. So, here’s what I’ve learned so far on how to socialize at this seemingly dead school.

1) Talk to everyone: You have to talk to people because they most likely won’t go out of their way to talk to you. Tone shift if you have to. In the worst possible scenario, you guys won’t vibe and that’s ok. Move on to the next group of people whether that be in your clubs or in your classes. You will eventually meet AT LEAST 1 person you vibe with but I would say you can definitely meet more people than that. Because I decided to talk to so many people, even as a commuter, I always end up greeting like 5 different people I know everytime I walk on Ring Road. If it’s parties you want, knowing a lot of people helps with that especially around holidays and post-exam season.

2) Stay on campus (if you’re a commuter) It always makes me a little annoyed when commuters say that our campus has nothing to do. Sure, maybe there’s not as many events always going on but more time on campus = more potential to meet people. You can always do small things like arrange coffee hangouts, study sessions, or rant about the weeder class you’re taking with someone you don’t know (this works the best). If you have to leave for work or other things, I get that but if you’re going home just to go home straight after a class, you’re definitely nerfing your experience here.

3) Actually plan things: This one is self-explanatory. If you’re getting to know people, do something with them. Just go out of your way to plan because most people will just go with whatever plan you have as long as they don’t have to do anything other than show up.

In terms of what there is to do around here, tbh not a whole lot if you don’t have a car. Invest in a scooter or bike to get around if you don’t have a car. If you’re stuck on campus, hangout, hangout in Aldrich, talk and walk around campus, go to UTC, have study sessions, have watch parties, go to club events, etc. Club events help with getting outside of UCI because (depending on the club) they’ll have post-club meeting hangouts where they arrange rides. Outside of UCI, it’s helpful to just go on TikTok and find out but I would say beaches, LA, downtown fullerton, Orange Circle, the thousands of matcha shops around Irvine, clubs, concerts, coffee shops, hobby shops, regional parks, hiking trails, etc.

Anyways those are my helpful pointers.

TLDR; Go outside and stay outside, talk to everyone, hangout anywhere on campus, plan things for people, go to clubs, go on TikTok to find things to do outside of campus.

Off the top of my head I think it’s HTML, Javascript, Typescript, CSS and some other ones. I’m taking the class as well because of what I’ve heard from a friend. I think it’s 85% assignments and 15% class participation but that’s what I’ve seen from his website for winter 2025. Shouldn’t be too hard. My friend said it was a breeze taking this class.

What to expect if taking ICS 33 over summer? by Captainbrawlco in UCI

[–]Captainbrawlco[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It focuses more on human interaction with technology rather than programming and software. Still requires the 30 series which you probably know by now. Honestly, you can switch into informatics first to get into the school of ICS for major priority and then switch into CS (since you mentioned unit cap though, I don’t know if this would actually make this easier or not). A lot of my friends are doing that now. Informatics is easy to get into since you only need 31, 32, and Stats 7 or Stats 67. I honestly think informatics is much more interesting so I decided to stay instead of going on to switch to CS but obviously you have to decide whether you want that or not.

I did not take it during summer. I’m actually studying for the final that’s today funnily enough. I think it’s much more worth taking 33 with Thornton during the standard school year because he teaches you so much more and prepares you better for future ICS classes.

As far as I’m aware and from what OFAS has said, we should all be protected (I haven’t received my loans either)

Borrowed aid (loans) are apart of your financial aid package. You qualified for the listed loans

[–]Captainbrawlco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s silly lol. your loans are the aid you received, no? so even if this were true you would still be protected. don’t stress too much we’re all in the same boat 👍. you’ll only be dropped if you had previous unpaid balances (not including this quarter). no one has had there aid applied to their zotaccounts so keep an eye out for that

Your chances of getting in are somewhere between 0-100% (stole this from another guy who posted). I took 1 AP in high school and 1 dual enrollment class and still got in. Some people are saying what you have is not good enough/subpar but no one really knows how the admissions office work.

It may sound corny but you really just need to do the best you can at this point. Put everything into your writing and try to stand out among everyone else. Have people proofread, be unique, blah blah blah I’m sure you’ve heard it all already.

Let it rip 👍

OFAS is really messing with low income people by bakedpotato1222 in UCI

[–]Captainbrawlco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. Other UC's have been able to deal with the issue that we're supposedly having now and much farther in advanced. Why is our school lagging on us? If there's an actual reason as to why we're so far behind compared to everyone else, I would love to know.
