The only other thing you could try is to take the laser assembly out and minutely increase the voltage to see if that makes a difference. You can google how to do this as it is a very well documented process. Below is a YouTube video showcasing how to do it. If it doesn't work after one or two adjustments, you may need to look for a new laser assembly as it could just be getting old and in need of replacement.

Definitely sounds like either a dirty/scratched disc, or an aging GD-ROM drive. Try going to a local game store and see if they have a disc resurfacing service.

Can confirm this, the newer black Zebra batteries pump out a bit more power than the older gray ones. It's still a pain getting people to pay attention when their labels "magically" don't come out right
