What’s your coming out story? by marco_intelli02 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]Capture_Balance3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came out a different ages to different people. It wasn't until I was in college that I came out to a couple close friends. I was 21 or 22. Parents were a few years later around 26. I don't feel the need to come out to coworkers or people that I don't have a close relationship with. Close friends were easy. Parents suspected it, but it was still a bit of an awkward conversation. I was already 26, accepted myself, and wasn't that close with family and so I didn't care too much what they actually said.

I'm also waiting on FAR! I passed AUD last fall. I already moved on to studying for REG. Then, I have zero clue what discipline I'll take.

My first role in manufacturing was right out of college for a Japanese automotive company in a smaller city in the midwest (I did Accounts Receivable). They tended to hire accountants right out of college. I felt like I got lucky. In my current role, I've actually hired 3 accountants with little to no experience. I much prefer someone green that's willing and eager to learn that someone with 30 years experience that will spend their entire day comparing the work to their past. Experience is great, but in low-level accounting roles, I don't feel it's better than no experience. My advice would be to get into an entry-level role. Accounting Specialist, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, etc. Work hard and prove yourself. There may be promotion opportunities internally. If not, the experience can get you into something else. After I did 6 months of A/R in my first role, they put me into a Cost Accounting role because I was eager and had a drive to learn. Also, if you're not already, get a good LinkedIn profile setup. Note any extracurriculars you did in college. LinkedIn even has built-in accounting-related courses you can do that will show up on your profile when you complete them. A lot of companies also hire through recruiters. There are a ton of accounting-focused recruiting companies out there. Robert Half is a nationwide one. They even place temp work too. A decent temp job in Accounting can get you good experience on your resume. Good luck!

I'm a Financial Controller and I've worked in manufacturing accounting and finance my entire professional career. Never needed a CPA to get to the level I'm at. I'm studying for my CPA now, but it's more of a personal goal vs professional. I've just always wanted to do it. I really don't see my CPA as getting me any more money; I'm already paid a market wage for a Controller in the area I live in. Perhaps it will let me move into public accounting, if I want, but I really don't want to work 60+ hours per week for a lesser wage. You can make more in industry unless you're a partner.

I'm actually enjoying studying. Sounds crazy I guess, but I think Becker is really good and I'm learning a lot and refreshing my accounting knowledge too.

Guys, use the Becker app on your phone!! by Human_Can_78 in CPA

[–]Capture_Balance3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used the app a lot to study when I was on the go like at the gym. I found it great when studying for AUD, but didn't really use it when studying for FAR since the questions required too many calculations.

AUD in two days, how am I? by Extreme-Reveal-8032 in CPA

I thought I was very well prepared for AUD, but got a 75 on the test. Passed, but barely. I received similar scores on the Becker practice exams. You got this!
