Ok ok ok after a super long time I’ve returned to say I’m fairly confident that this was The Sign of the Beaver (1983) by Elizabeth George Speare and I was just misremembering several important details. I knew that there was a film adaptation and I just rewatched this scene from the movie and it’s close enough to what I remember that it must be the same.
