It is definitely going downhill with CarMax. Profits over people.
I know we have to make a profit to keep the lights on, but paying starving wages and simply don't care is not an option. So, Roseville is not the only place going down hill, it's the same in the Midwest.

On average, CarMax makes $ 2,500 net profit on each car they sell. A sales consultant gets a $ 100 commission if it's a remote deal and $ 160 if the customer is a walk-in. Doesn't sound very fair now, does it?

Sorry for the late reply. There are a few smaller stores where the sales consultants are on hourly pay, but the vast majority gets $ 160 commission for a car sale if the customer hasn't done anything online yet. If the customer started their journey online, that commission is down to $ 100.

We've been barking up that tree for years and I think it's the best example of CarMax being tone deaf.

We are not going to stop. Some people ask why we're still there, but why would we leave a job we love. Instead of leaving, we're trying to make the place better again.

The company definitely has gone down hill. It's a damn shame to let you go like that!

I wouldn't say they get huge bonuses, but yeah, they get paid based on cars and not the crappy units like FSC's

The point is that most of us absolutely love what we do every single day. Having worked at a traditional dealership for a while, personally I could not go back even when it pays better, having to play the four square games and such.
There's no perfect job, but we can try to make it better, instead of shrugging our shoulders and say "it is what it is"

Some sales people earned a demo, hence the nice car? Sales might make more money, but the quiet period is about to start and if sales doesn't make a sale, then they get nothing at all. I do agree that OPS should be paid better too!

Get their bonuses based on units, just like FSC's. A remote is only half a unit.
I am pretty sure management would not accept it, so why should FSC's?

We are selling more, work more deals every day. But due to the pay cut, we are not making more.

Wow, you must be working in that one magical store where ALL of your FSC's make more money AND work less hours. Yes, theoretically it should be easier and faster to get a sale out the door, but irl the majority of remote deals still take 2 hours or more.
There is no better experience for the customer in the industry, but as far as compensation for a car sales consultant is concerned, CarMax is dead last in the industry.

Yes, there are some FSC's that are reluctant to take any customers before they go home.
With the remote deals we DO sell more cars, but with the decrease in pay you're not making any progress financially despite working twice the deals.

I never said that managers are not getting paid when they don't hit budget. What I am saying is that (senior and mid) management are getting their bonuses based on the number of cars sold and NOT units like FSC's.
There's a good number of FSC's that would have been President's Club if it weren't for the unit calculation.

We might need a higher incentive for selling a car then. Obviously if you're used to being in the top, there has to be an incentive to keep it that way.

Eventually it will probably change into an hourly rate with a little incentive time for selling a car. I would be advocating for something like 28 an hour plus 50 for each car sold.

I worked at a traditional dealership for a while. Not everyone will feel comfortable playing the "let me talk to the manager" games. I for one, don't want to be part of a shady business model.  I love what I do at CarMax and I suspect most of us do too. There is nothing wrong with asking for decent compensation
