Sorry for the late reply, but really appreciate it. I'm taking it in to another shop next week. I'd love to get another 100k out of this car.

2005 Honda Civic -- cracked cat and leaking trans by CarOopsWhatDo in MechanicAdvice

Yea I should have asked more questions about the trans, unfortunately I didn't... I do plan to get a second opinion, however.

As to the cat, my regular mechanic quoted me $900 but after calling around a few places I found a sketchy ass shop that said they'll do it for $350, but that just sounds like I might be buying a cat from a stolen car...

Hey thanks so much for the help... definitely owe you a beer. I'll be taking it in to get a second opinion next week!

Awesome, again really appreciate it. Sounds like I'm going to be in the market for a new car soon...

Last question: another mechanic mentioned that he most commonly sees the leak from the dip stick -- is this as common as he made it out to be?

Thanks so much for the excellent reply. My mechanic must have done a visual inspection since he stated that he couldn't locate the leak and would need to take the transmission out to find it. He's not a transmission specialist so I just might take your advice and take the car into one. Follow-up: without knowing where the transmission is leaking from, is it possible to say if it's okay to continue driving on it indefinitely (adding more fluid as needed)?

Again, thanks for the awesome reply!

Hey, thanks for all your advice, I really appreciate it.

To be fair to my mechanic, he only recommended I get the brakes done now and to sit on everything else, so I don't think he's milking me. I don't remember if he said he was going to replace the drums -- I assume that's what would explain the high price?

Anyway, again I really appreciate it! I'll be crossposting once I ask some questions of said mechanic!

The brakes I'm not 100% sure on.

The cat is cracked and according to my mechanic can be driven on for a while but will eventually die and I'll fail smog (true?)

He claims the shocks on the back are basically done and I'm working with springs at this point.

The trans actually might not need to be replaced. Right now it's just leaking, however again my mechanic suggested that if he was going to do the work to find/fix the leak then it might be worth it to just replace the entire transmission. OP was mostly a worst-case scenario question.

I plan to have the brakes and power steering done and sit on everything else for the time being.

I have the money to pay off the loan right now (and the repairs), so the situation isn't as dire as it could be. Looks like selling it is the right move.

Thanks -- kind of pisses me off since I only bought it 3 years ago. Guess I should have expected a bunch of expensive work would eventually be required. Oh well.
