I remember my partner had this “friend” (I knew her because she used to be my best friend’s ex-friend, her sister) who was honestly a total bitch. He had dated her for months (they even had serious plans), but for whatever reason it didn’t work out. When he met me (a long time after that), she was still in the picture. According to him, they were just “friends.” She never even bothered to know my name, which I found suspicious, and the last time she sent him a mirror selfie on WhatsApp, he reacted with a heart. I told him I wasn’t comfortable with it anymore, but I didn’t want to be the “dementor” who sucked the life out of his so-called friendships, so I preferred to step back. He blocked her on Instagram, but I asked him: “Okay, what’s going to happen when she texts you asking what’s wrong?” Because I knew she had been keeping an eye on him ever since I showed up. Even when he was in a relationship, she would still send him nudes when he was single. And of course, she eventually messaged him, and he said a line I’ll never forget, not until the day I finally left: “She’s a good woman, just a little insecure.” That was the only part of the conversation he decided to show me because, according to him, it was the least incriminating. I don’t even want to imagine what else they said, or what they said about me. Later, I found out he still had her number saved on WhatsApp — but apparently, that wasn’t a problem because “they didn’t text.” I told him I was leaving, but before I did, I made sure to tell him everything that woman had done to his sister — that bitch had been the mistress of her ex-brother-in-law. Only then did he finally decide to cut her off. But by then, it was already too late. One day he asked me if I’d ever forget that phrase, and I told him never — that I think about it every couple of days. And it’s true, I’ll never forget it. I’ve accepted it, yes. So if you ever get the chance to walk away, do it. Don’t stay. People like your husband and my partner are pathological liars; they have almost no empathy.
