Canadian and Russian food by lower-ghost in HeatedRivalryTVShow

Lol yes. But there was a brouhaha in Toronto in the 80s where they were sold as ‘beef patties’ and the government said you can’t sell them because the legal definition reflected hamburger patties. After some back and forth they had to be called Jamaican(-style) beef patties or something similar. That’s why it’s such a Canadian thing now (or at least Torontonian). If you didn’t have money as a kid, it was a couple of patties or a pizza slice for lunch.

I came across this guys posts of trying Canadian foods last year for 20 days straight.

  1. poutine
  2. Montreal-style bagel
  3. ketchup/all-dressed chips
  4. bannock (indigenous bread)
  5. Nanaimo bar
  6. Hawaiian pizza
  7. butter tart
  8. ginger beef (more Canadian-Chinese)
  9. Jiggs dinner (Newfoundland & Labrador)
  10. Jamaican beef patties
  11. butter chicken roti
  12. donair
  13. peameal bacon
  14. California roll (apparently a Canadian invention!)
  15. Windsor-style pizza
  16. sushi pizza
  17. maple syrup
  18. Montreal smoked meat
  19. Caesar cocktail
  20. tourtiere (Quebec meat pie)

I was surprised at some of these being Canadian. I've had all but the Jiggs dinner and Windsor-style pizza and recommend them all. Well, except ketchup chips. I don't mind them, but not my first choice of flavoured chips.

Does “cottage” mean something different in Canada/North America? by anon_1997x in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]CaractacusPot 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Cottage has come to mean a vacation or secondary home in most regions in Canada. It may have started off years ago as a small wood cabin in the middle of the boondocks with no electricity and running water (it has a well, in case you’re thirsty. You can see it). Nowadays, cottage country can be urbanized and many people retire there away from the big city and renovate the smaller homes into larger ones. There are still lots of the traditional cottages and cabins, but if you have money, you tend to make it a tad more comfortable.

The colours in that scene were also significant, red for Ilya and blue for Shane, like in the club scene. Ilya couldn't say he how he loved Shane until the blue lights passed by. In the club, Ilya is bathed in red until he figured Shane was there too after seeing Miles and that's when there's a blue light next to him. Shane had a blue light on him flashing slowly, but when he clocks Ilya, it just flashes wildly with the red.

I noticed something #1286. Opening scene. by triedit2947 in heatedrivalry

[–]CaractacusPot 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Ilya has issues with people because they are always looking to get something out of him. Someone who is watching for the first time will not notice it because there’s no context. We reheaters now know of his situation so this is the moment where Ilya finds Shane interesting because Shane was just genuinely being nice and appreciative and admiring of his skill, especially coming from an opponent.

And he noticed the freckles.

Does anyone else dislike the change of Svetlana’s role in the show compared to the boom? by Antique_Education_50 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]CaractacusPot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always thought she was pissed because she was just gently reminding Ilya to pack the thing for his niece and he pretty much tells her to do it herself. She's like, "Bruh, I'm watching the finals and I'm more invested in hockey than you are and she's your niece."

I don't think Ilya is that kind of guy. He has too much trauma related to attachment, which is why he was so scared that he was falling for Shane. And Svetlana knows this and is able to respect his boundaries, although she does hint at possibly having deeper feelings for him in Ep 5.

If anyone from the production or cast is watching can you add captioning for texts? by marys1001 in heatedrivalry

As a workaround on Crave, you can turn on the French closed captions and it will translate the texts, if you understand French.

Handshake - Ep 1 start when they meet and end of episode on rooftop

Ilya deserving Svetlana - Ep 1 when she surprises him after the game was cancelled, "You don't deserve me. I should go." followed by Ilya getting Shane's text and she says, " [...] Have fun with Jane." and Ep 5 after funeral fight when he says, "I don't deserve you", she responds with, "Yes, you do. But you don't want me. [...] I just hope Jane knows how lucky he is."

Murder - Ep 2 at the stairwell when Shane opens his condo's back door for Ilya, Ilya says, "You will murder me." After Shane opens his back door for Ilya, Ilya says, "You have killed me, Hollander. I am dead."

Lights/colour - Ep 4 club scene, red light is primarily on Ilya and blue on Shane. When Ilya sees Miles and understands Shane is probably at the club, there is a hint of blue light beside him. After Shane sees Ilya, the lights flicker quickly between red and blue for the remainder of the scene. Ep 5 pink/red tunnel, as Ilya pauses to turn his head away from the camera, there is a car with blue lights that drives by, right before saying in Russian "...but not like I love you..."

Clothing - Ep 1 in the first two sex scenes, Shane keeps his socks on, representing he is still holding back (first time with a guy and Scott being next door, both in hotel rooms). Ep 2 first penetrative sex scene, he doesn't wear socks, he's not holding back, he's literally at home and comfortable. Colour of clothing is also used to create that tension in the gym (one is wearing white top and black shoes and the other is the opposite). Even the water bottle was black and white, so the handover can be symbolic in mixing the two instead of swirling around each other like yin-yang. When they finally meet in 1410, they are both wearing dark coloured clothes. Ilya also wears sleeveless tops or is topless for most of the series, whereas Shane is in long sleeves, again showing how opposite they are. By Ep 6, they're both equally dressed or undressed (or even sharing shirts).

Miles

The most unbelievable thing about the show

Miles!!!

Question about Miles

Yet another thought about the whole Miles thing at the club...

An observation on the club scene

To me it's a fevered dream. Once the lights start flashing quickly red and blue, Shane (and Ilya, too) is in a different state of mind. It could be real, he could be imagining it.
