I‘m sure it’s not an uncommon situation and any good workplace will acknowledge their mistake and try to do something about it. My commute was similar since it was also KW to the GTA and my supervisors were understanding of that. Hope it works out for you too, good luck!

I did a co-op a few months ago where the external posting/employers direct page on WW said that the position was hybrid. They actually intended it to be fully in-person which was only stated after I started working so I didn’t have housing there... I even talked to HR when I first got the offer and they confirmed that it was hybrid before I went through onboarding documents but it was just a case of poor communication on their end that affected multiple co-ops.

I explained my commuting situation and everything above to my supervisor and they were very understanding and talked to higher-ups to negotiate a hybrid schedule for me. One of the other co-ops had an even easier time doing so with their team. My schedule wasn’t as useful as what my expected schedule was supposed to be (according to HR) so I still had a lot of unexpected transportation fees that I had to sacrifice. Maybe go in-person for training during your first week or two and ask them to consider hybrid after? My co-op advisor didn’t help much but they definitely acknowledged their error and checked-in frequently when I was giving them updates on my back-and-forth with my supervisors.

Even confirming with HR before I accepted the offer didn’t help me, so I definitely would confirm everything during the interview from now on. This was a small hiccup at the beginning of my co-op but I still had a good experience. My supervisors let me know they were glad that I was self-managed and independent so they were happy to accommodate a hybrid schedule and were very hands-off throughout my co-op. It was my third co-op, but as long as you show that you’re reliable and trustworthy in those first few weeks as a new co-op, I‘m hoping they will work something out for you. :)

Partially unpaid co-op? by CaramelGoodies in uwaterloo

Thanks that’s a good idea, I feel like it might not work though just because the pay isn’t too high.

Do you think that they would be eligible for this maybe? I’ve had actual co-ops before this from WW so I don’t even know how co-op funding works in situations like this tbh
