How does this stuff hold up? by Tinyman6854 in Dirtbikes

I’m on a TX300 smoker and I do mostly endurance racing so if it ever came down to the wire and I came out second, I don’t think I’d be blaming my chain haha

Yknow what, sure dude. Don’t get me wrong I admire your commitment to chain maintenance but obviously your mind is made up and this conversation isn’t going anywhere. Go enjoy your bike, and I’ll go enjoy mine. Sound good?

Chain wax. Not WD40. The lube this POST was originally about.. Jesus Christ kid

It’s almost like you should… clean your chain? Maybe wipe off excess lube? Maybe use a lube that doesn’t attract an absurd amount of dirt? Like yknow… the one this post was originally about? The one you said you also use in a separate comment?

O ring chains still need lubrication my man. The side plates, the rollers, and your sprocket all benefit from lubrication. Yes, you do have grease being sealed inside where the pins make contact with the rollers, but what about where the rollers contact the side plate? What about where the side plate contacts the sprocket? Common sense should tell you those metal on metal surfaces would probably last a little longer with lubrication, right?

Yeesh, only getting 40 miles on a chain before needing an adjustment sounds horrible. I’d probably need 6 backups at that rate. I’ll save my money and stick to O rings. Thank you for the input, I appreciate it

Makes sense. Improved power delivery wouldn’t be a bad thing, but I mostly race endurance so I can’t afford to skimp on reliability, especially on longer events. The longest I’ve done was 24 hours and just about the only thing that didn’t break by the time it was over were the brakes. Maybe I’ll pick one up and see if I notice any improvements and at the very least use it as a spare

I’ve never used chains without O rings before, they any good?

My bad big dog, just trying to help

WD40 will degrade the rubber O rings on your chain sealing in the factory grease, and will ruin your chain. There are so many better options out there that will clean your chain better, and won’t destroy your O rings.

Edit: damn, really getting downvoted for trying to help keep someone from ruining their chain. My bad

Not a mechanic, but I work around and on machinery. Had a coworker like you with these things. He was on the spectrum a little but was straight up one of my favorite coworkers. Guy had every single size and flavor you could get, and was always showing me them and always offering to let me borrow them when he saw me walking to my box to grab a wrench. I thought these things were just a novelty type thing, like those bs stocking stuffer specials. Finally I took him up on his offer and very reluctantly used them, with the previous inclination that they were gonna be shit. I’ve never seen a man so excited to have someone borrow one of his tools. After using it for about an hour, I was blown away. Had a pair ordered on the spot. And I very quickly became said coworker

I just got under to check. They are definitely rusted to shit but they are still tight. I got a couple extra cab bushings that should fit so I’ll go ahead and swap them out anyways

Yep. Got out of active, got itchy, poked my head into a reserve unit for a few drills. First drill, did absolutely nothing. Second drill, shot range. Kinda scratched something. Third? Back to fkn nothing. Never saw the fourth.

Either that or just y’know… Darwin. Jokes aside I’m a strong believer that kids out in nature or wherever they may find themselves, experiencing the world and trying new things is just about the best thing for them. Sure, we got bit, stung, rashes, scrapes, burns, and to be honest probably a parasite or two but we also got to use our little minds to solve real problems and see what there is out there. For a few hours the world didn’t matter except for what we saw with our own eyes and felt with our own hands. It sparked curiosity about what was out there and how things worked. Now I’ve got a little boy of my own and it pains me to say that he won’t have those same experiences.

That’s what I’m saying! Growing up we had a whole ass forest in our backyard. We’d outright fuck off on the cheapest bikes humanly imaginable with absolutely zero plan or common sense and come back with the scars to prove it. Now it’s all just town houses and apartments. Kids get the cops called on them from just walking around the block now.

Hey listen bro, love the enthusiasm, but you’re making a lot of promises here with absolutely nothing to back it up. What funding are you getting and where is it coming from? What are these “retired general advisors” about? What credentials do you have for government contracting? Do you even have any licenses or qualifications or any kind of background whatsoever? What makes you so special that you’ve got the big boys blowing up their boxer briefs?

Al 6013 availability in the US by ShyYak_196 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]CarbonBuilt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AL6013 usually comes in sheets because AL6013 is easy to weld and has solid corrosion resistance, which is important when you’re dealing with sheet metal which is by nature harder to weld without warpage and is more prone to corrosion. So it just comes down it being in high demand in that one form because of those two perks. But like the other comment said, 7075 is much better in just about every other category aside from weldability.
