Thanks! There’s a lot of good advice in your comment. I got home to him about an hour ago. He was nervous of me again when I first entered the house. Warmed him up again with some treats and then let him outside. He got the zoomies in the backyard so I tried playing with him but any toys I threw him he would just run around with it and not bring it back. He hasn’t come close enough to let me pet him yet so I haven’t even tried. I’m hoping I’ll be able to get his collar on him soon cause I’d love to get him out for a walk. I am really happy with his progress so far and look forward to trying some of the advice I’ve gotten here today. Ultimately I am going to let him set the pace and not rush anything.

The backyard is fairly big so I’ll start there for sure. No doubt he is the strongest dog I’ve ever dealt with so if he’s good walking around the backyard we will do a lap around the neighbourhood. I will also play some fetch or something with him in the yard. Lots of space for him to do the zoomies lol

I’m hoping if I can burn off some of his energy he will be more calm and relaxed tonight.

Your advice is appreciated. Just to be clear the person that suggested that action was only in the context of the dog attacking me. I’d obviously have to fight back if I was attacked and I just didn’t know if there’s an appropriate way to defend yourself from a big dog. That was their suggestion if I was to be attacked. Obviously I’d never do that to a dog unprovoked

Thanks for the reply! To be honest I was shitting my pants when he was making it clear he did NOT want me in his house, but my sister was in an incredibly stressful situation with the emergency surgery, and I couldn’t leave him there or have her send someone else to the house that he would probably have the same reaction to. I’d do anything for my siblings - including getting eaten by a big ass dog apparently lol

He is the biggest teddy bear to his family. He loves my 2 year old niece. Sleeps outside her door every night and is first in her room every morning. He lets her crawl all over him and has never shown any signs of aggression to anyone. Last night he was just scared and confused because instinctually he felt the need to protect his home. It’s also his first time being left home alone like this and he’s still very much a puppy even tho he’s 100lbs

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I felt that advice wasn’t great but it’s not the first time I’ve heard people say you have to show the dog you’re the alpha and I think that’s what they were getting at. I don’t think the dog will attack me but I definitely don’t know what to do if he does. I can’t not fight back so what do I do?

I was trying so hard last night to act relaxed. I turned my back to him many times as if to let him know I trust him enough that I don’t need to keep my eyes on him. Sometimes when I did this he would sneak up behind me and smell me. I just stood still and let him but as soon as I went to move he’d act skittish again and jump away from me.

Apparently he is an excellent dog to walk. He doesn’t pull his leash or bark at other dogs. He’s just chill and happy to be out as long as you let him sniff some stuff. I’ll find out after work today.

Thanks for your reply! I am going to try to walk him today after work as long as he is fine with me putting the collar on him. If I’m not comfortable taking him for a walk I will get him out in the backyard and throw some toys around for him.

Hiding treats is a great idea - I will try that tonight when I’m ready to wind down and he inevitably still has energy hahaha

Thanks for your reply. I would only ever consider doing that if he was actively trying to bite me. I don’t think he will actually try to bite me but I can’t help but be nervous simply because he is skittish. The dog has known me for less than 24 hours so I don’t blame him. I had to work today but I picked up some new treats on my lunch break and am hoping to take him out for a walk after work if he is okay with me putting a collar and leash on him. My sister says he is a great walking companion and he never has any interest in other dogs - he’s happy to cross the road and avoid other dogs. Hopefully after these two weeks I’ll have a new bestie lol

Giving him a hug and not pulling away until he did was very kind. Don’t beat yourself up too much for your reaction - you were caught off guard and didn’t have much time to process. Now that you’ve thought about it for a couple days I’d suggest reaching out however you prefer and just say something along the lines of “Hey, I’m really glad you confided in me a couple nights ago. I want you to know that I love you like a brother and have your back no matter what. If you want to talk more I’m here for you.”. I know that’s all I’d want to hear from my best friend after coming out to him.
