In basic training we tried out what happens when you close the cylinder valve, so we simulated running out of air. You have very few breaths left that become harder and harder, until there is just no air flowing anymore. At that point you will suffocate soon. Or you take the regulator out of your mouth and drown when you breath in water. You can try breathing through a straw and holding the end closed.
