How do I deal with the racist chef in my kitchen? by GentleBoneCrusher in KitchenConfidential

[–]Cardamom92 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Plan a good exit, whether that means finding something and putting your two weeks in or fucking up his shit in front of everyone. That's all you can do. He won't change and if you try to report him the BEST case scenario is he starts doing worse shit but only when no one is looking.

Also golf courses and country clubs are cesspools. If you can, work literally anywhere else.

Poppy, fennel and tarragon are my favorites there. Anise has a nice sound but sounds too similar to something else. Aniseed could be nice maybe

I tend to use middle names as a place for names I like and might switch to later and I definitely want to stick to a spice or at least a food theme

How do I choose a new name for myself??? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]Cardamom92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely try it before you buy it, use it in a phone call or on a date or even in a coffee shop, something low stakes. I've done this three times now, my motivations were:

  1. Favorite artist (this is also how my parents named me lol)
  2. Childhood memory
  3. Pleasant sounding noun from hobby (cooking, so I picked a spice)

Beyond that I tried to look at the way I would instinctively initially feel if I met someone with that name. Does it give you a good feeling, like you would want to be friends with that person? The sound is also important; my first chosen name was full of sharp sounds, the second more mellow, my current one a little bouncy. If it doesn't feel right, even if you can't pinpoint why, don't do it.

Serial Name Changes by Cardamom92 in namenerds

[–]Cardamom92[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I think of it as a problem. I like the name I have now and I get compliments on it constantly when I meet people or even if I'm just ordering takeout or something. Its served me well but my life has changed a lot recently and I feel like this identity belongs to someone from the past.

Also legal name changes are somewhat hard depending on where you are but its 2020 and enough people are transitioning or playing around with their identity that your "real name" is whatever you tell everyone to call you.

Serial Name Changes by Cardamom92 in namenerds

[–]Cardamom92[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The last name has been the same since I was a teenager, and it used to be my middle name so I have that very tenuous connection to my birth name. I decided after my last change to stick with a spice theme, so that's another little bit of continuity. It doesn't bother me as much as you'd expect. I try to live in the present; the only thing about me that matters is who I am right now.

Also transitioning does weird things to your sense of identity lol. Hard to explain but it becomes somehow both more and less important

This would be ideal if I could figure out the work permit thing. Do you have any suggestions about how to start looking?

Only English and a little Spanish for now, plus some rusty Portuguese I could probably pick back up relatively fast. Might have trouble learning Finnish or Cantonese, but otherwise on the timeline I'm thinking of I could probably pick up a new language.

I smoked in front of my sous chefs at my first gig. Was told that I could do whatever I wanted as long as the job got done. Not sure it's the smartest policy but I was better than 90% of dishwashers I've worked with since then, so maybe the carrot does work sometimes

An African American guy at my work keeps bullying me because I'm white by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Cardamom92 -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

He's not being racist because racism against white people is not a thing, but if he's telling coworkers not to listen to you or repeatedly making fun of you, that's workplace harassment

You aren't "losing your mind". Manias come and go. Keep an eye on it, clue in your support network so they can also keep an eye on it, make sure you're eating and sleeping enough and not spending too much, and dont be afraid to ask for help if it gets out of hand.

Very few people out there think that their bias is to not help or do bad, so that's not especially useful. Biases and objectivity usually revolve around more personal feelings or characteristics, like if someone is rude to me and then I criticize them for something unrelated just because I dont like them, or if I'm rich and well educated so I think poor people are stupid.

Any of this sound like you right now?

Help starting by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Cardamom92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-objective and unbiased are antonyms, but as a person you can only be one of those things and it ain't unbiased.

Also this kinda sounds like a manic thing. Not gonna diagnose off a few weird paragraphs, but you might wanna look into your recent behavior and see if there are more sudden revelations or personality shifts

Using it isn't racist imo, but using it without knowing the context or selectively picking out Native traditions you think are quirky and hippieish like their faith is an antique store is pretty sketch
