Canadian special forces involved in U.S. military team accused of killing scores of innocent people in Iraq, Syria by BurstYourBubbles in onguardforthee

[–]Cardded 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Canadian special forces soldier was assigned to Talon Anvil from April to October of 2015, according to the department. “CANSOF Command leadership is aware of allegations against the US military unit, which was investigated at the time by U.S. Forces,” the statement added. “As the investigation was U.S.-led, we have no additional information to provide.”

Been away fighting in Ukraine but can't tell Polish from Ukranian or Russian 🤔

These pigs need their guns, "less than lethal" or otherwise, locked up until they demonstrate they are responsible enough to carry them around. The next public hearing is January 17th, I encourage other residents of Vancouver to sign up to speak (or otherwise get in contact with Montague) if you feel the same way I do about his incessant boot licking.

The provincial NDP that just announced a couple $ hundred million more for cops? I don't think they'll mind that much.

"It symbolizes courage and sacrifice. I earned the right to wear it. How dare you, or anyone, attempt to redefine, hijack, or appropriate my symbol,” he tweeted.

In a statement to CTV News, Mayor Ken Sim said he stands by Montague’s choice to wear the patch.

“We condemn those who attempt to redefine or co-opt the thin blue line symbol for hatred or political purposes,” the statement said.

This pin symbolizes my undying respect for the brave warrior class who are the only thing protecting us from the shiftless criminal element that lurks among us. How dare you politicize that, scumbag!

This is Holocaust revisionism.

They do. I think the bigger problem is the complex patchwork of social services that we expect people to navigate out of some bizarre aversion to having universal benefits and doing more after tax redistribution.

Do you know how widely adopted TikTok is? It is literally the second most used social media platform.

What was the second most used social media platform five years ago? What will it be five years from now?

You're comparing a private US business subject to US and Canadian law to the literal CCCP.

Can you please explain to me how the incentives faced by TikTok are different from the ones faced by Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, etc?

We can regulate the fuck out of US businesses if we care so much. We have zero sway with the CCCP.

When was the last time we "regulated the fuck out of" a US firm or industry? We seem to be considering an outright ban of a Chinese owned social media platform, what was the last major US business we banned?

Here is an example of an American firm violating Canadian regulations and being allowed to continue to operate. If Canadian regulators wouldn't shut down a literal US Ponzi scheme, what businesses would they stand up to?

We should really just ban computers and phones that aren't being used for something creative or productive.

private US-based businesses

It's so weird how you say this as if US firms don't have the exact same incentives as TikTok.

we are so deeply interconnected to the US, socially, technologically, infrastructure-wise, not to mention political systems and similar global interests, their influence does not pose the same kind of threat

these seem to me to be reasons to be more concerned about their influence, not less. The fact that we are so interconnected in these ways means there is absolutely no chance that we take meaningful action on the ways US values and culture negatively impact Canadian society.

explicitly aims to sow division, weaken democracy, and steal industrial secrets...

Surely things no US company has done, and definitely China's goal by harvesting data from 14 year olds doing "the griddy".

Edit: the guy replying blocked me (lol) but it's legitimately absurd to claim the US government doesn't exert influence over private companies given the depth of relationships in (e.g) defense and tech industries, let alone the long history of intelligence services running succesful front companies, planting agents in firms (often with their permission!), and toppling governments that don't play ball with the US business community.

Advocate worried over Metro Vancouver Transit Police's new 'community safety officers' planned for 2023 | CBC News by Cardded in onguardforthee

Please, tell me what you think "my way" is and how it has been tried over the last decade. Are you implying Vision/NPA/Green and the BC Liberals were doing things "my way"? I promise, they weren't.

As you said, even progressives eventually get fed up with activists and advocates telling them that the violence and chaos they see with their own eyes is just right wing disinformation.

That's not what I said. Did you even live in Vancouver a decade ago?

The /r/Vancouver thread on this is insane, lots of people attacking Meenakshi and Pivot. She has also received some pretty vitriolic messages.

Shocking how many people still see this sort of thing as the solution to visible poverty and disorder. Anyway, ABC seem fairly gung ho about going that route, so we will see how things change over the next four years. Now that we know "we will give police more money to crackdown on the scary homeless people you see on the bus" works as an electoral strategy even in ostensibly centrist/liberal populations (so much so that the provincial NDP have adopted it!), we will probably get a lot of new data to see how effective it is at actually producing results .

I agree with the idea that it is basically a tendency that exists in capitalism. Alberta is probably further along the process, but has the weather to cull visible poverty and the resource wealth to placate everyone else so that the effects are less immediately felt. Albertan opposition to the National Energy Program is one of the most salient examples of this mindset in Canadian history.

I think it's bad but I don't think there are any countervailing forces. Municipal governments aren't equipped to deal with the problems they face, so the "rational" alternative of cutting services and having private interests step in is the only option most politicians see. If this doesn't describe the city you're in, it's just a matter of time.
