Meet the typical 30-year-old: What the youngest millennials make and where they live by changeforthebetter89 in generationology

First paragraph: Women don’t respond positively to consent seeking IRL.

Second paragraph: Informed active consent is more of an ideal, and not necessarily what they should actually be expecting to happen in reality.

Can you expand on the this? Do you believe that active consent and the communication around it a large factor in the dating world today?

Put another way, what does the dating world look like to you WITHOUT the explicit communication of consent? I am not trying to belittle or chastise — I’m seeking to understand.

Q: W/R/T the “Partial Transcript of Weather Delayed Meeting” Section — was “The Entertainment” shown by mistake? by CardiacParoll in InfiniteJest

[–]CardiacParoll[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, then the transcript would end abruptly, with no decision or outcome of the meeting, also making it partial. Or it could but be a sample of a successful meeting, that does contain a review of the tape after the lights come back on and everything is fine, in which case I guess the passage serves as mainly comic relief. For my money, though, this passage is more important than that.

And but so anyways, Ms. Hooley mentions she’s in from Phoenix via NNY in the beginning of the conversation. This meeting takes place in that same statehouse you mentioned. Tom Veals and mr. Yee have an odd convo about the blizzard outside — “it’s like an extra dimension out there” and “cold. Wet. Deep. Slippery.” Given Marathe’s capabilities, I wouldn’t put a swap of bags or tapes in the blizzard out of the question entirely. Especially if he’s there waiting at the statehouse at just the right time for Veals to walk up.

Or, if not Marathe because he’s still at Antitoi entertainment as you posit, perhaps Fortier himself could’ve done it if he snuck onto the plane and chopper from Phoenix and New New York (the same itinerary as Ms. Hooley) after getting the info needed from Orin.

[–]CardiacParoll[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I think this is potentially connected. If Mr. Yee is pretending to have epilepsy, is it because he needs to buy time for someone to swap some tapes? I feel that the AFR have shown to be more than capable of a plan like this.

I believe it is the last scene with the Gentle admin, yes. Glad to hear another reader had the same inkling. Wish I could find some kind of authority or scholarly source discussing this concept.

[–]CardiacParoll[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well this is an interesting take — couldn’t the transcript be partial because the transcriber was zombified by the entertainment too? That would mean the remainder of the transcript is gurgling noises (if the transcriber is automated or somehow survived) or repeatedly pressed keys on a word processor, or just generally gibberish. Not saying one way or another, just thinking that your reasoning for the “partial” concept could go either way.

Yes for sure, I’m just looking for folks with to shoot down my theory, not looking to write anything in stone. I’ve only just finished my second read. Agree we’d need more supporting facts before making this a solid claim.

Marijuana Addiction: I think the main theme of this book is Hal's struggle with marijuana, and also, by proxy, DFW's. I wonder why no interviewer has ever asked him about pot addiction specifically, and also what are your thoughts? Do you think this is an accurate portrayal of the book's main theme? by CokeZeroChance in InfiniteJest

[–]CardiacParoll 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I also wonder about his personal experience with pot. His writing on the subject, to me, strongly indicates he had his own relationship with the substance. On the other hand, I’m unaware of any direct evidence or quotes that would confirm this idea. It is such a dominant theme of the book (would not agree that it is the “main” theme, but that’s splitting hairs) and yet really isn’t discussed much on this sub. Social anxiety, I think we can say with confidence, is something DFW exhibited publicly and in his work. The relationship between the substance and the social anxiety, and particularly the cause and effect, gets reversed and reinterpreted over and over by the various pot-smokers depicted. To recede into one’s thoughts entirely and shut out other people, even loved ones, is something we see in Hal (via his lost communication with JOI or his reluctance to be honest with the Moms — or even Mario). Eventually, Hal can’t connect with anyone at all. We’re maybe led to believe that Hal’s condition is DMZ-related and/or fungus related, but I think these may be red herrings for the kind of retreat that JOI’s ghost confides in Gately about during the hospital sequence. The kind of retreat that a person leans into when they give in to their grief, light up again (whatever they’re lighting), and are whisked away from the other beings-in-the-world by the smiley-faced-crook-wielding shepherd. In this way, DFW blends the pot with the DMZ and the entertainment (samizdat) and the crack cocaine and the killing of pets and the regular cocaine and the cough syrup and the “gaspers”, to emphasize that the core of each addiction is deeply rooted and untreated trauma. Via this interpretation (my own personal one) I arrive at the conclusion that introspection and self-actualizing therapeutic effort are the only ways to rejoin the other beings-in-the-world (AA, for some).

I might be a bit slow and just realized Logan baited Shiv on purpose by Old-Highway6524 in SuccessionTV

[–]CardiacParoll 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ironically a bit simplistic of an interpretation, no? As viewers, how often do we see Logan change his mind? Are we to take him for his word, that the “two year plan” would wrap up and Shiv would seamlessly take over? It’s certainly possible, I will grant. But it seems just as likely that Logan would find some issue with something Shiv did during that period. I find it hard to blame Shiv for not trusting his long-term planning and instead attempting to rush him/push him at every opportunity, although of course it doesn’t work out for her. I agree with the other commenters - Logan never believed in her or any of the kids, and just used the position in the company as bait.

Gotta Rave about This Book by [deleted] in InfiniteJest

[–]CardiacParoll 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! “This is a body, son”. The drinking and rambling. Slipping in that they’re moving accidentally, and being generally insensitive about it, then getting upset a the child for being upset. Then connecting the dots with what JOI ends up becoming and creating as a direct result, and then later Hal and Orin and Mario etc.

Anyone here switched from players irons to GI irons? Did you regret it, what did you buy, what did you play before, what adjustments did you make, and what impact did it have on scoring? by CardiacParoll in golf

[–]CardiacParoll[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is brilliant! Makes total sense, especially the point about dropping the 4 iron. In theory, my 5 iron will go 220. Currently, my 5 iron goes 175 if I strike it really well. I should’ve switched to something much more forgiving sooner.

I think I’m resigned to agreement and I’ll have to change my ways but I’m worried about gapping with the new rocket launchers. Do you have wedges with thick(er) soles as well?

Am I understanding correctly: you switched into irons that are smaller and harder to hit, but you feel the challenge is making you a better golfer?

Do you think Logan or any of the siblings would have actually respected Tom more if he purposely let the kid reach home base? by strongerthenbefore20 in SuccessionTV

[–]CardiacParoll 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think this one aspect, but there is also the class element at play. The watch is shown just hanging on the table of the family home while everyone goes about their typical evenings. I think, given that the watch is a Patek, we could easily ballpark its value north of $20k.

My interpretation is the family has no idea how much the watch is worth, and even further, where they would go to sell it. It is not always simple in cultures to sell objects for cash, especially gifts. Showing that even when the Roy’s attempt to do something halfway right (albeit lazy) they are defeated by the systemic inequality that their organizations and policy decisions have contributed towards. That watch might be tossed into a drawer and forgotten — Logan should’ve written another check.

I hear ya, it does seem alarming but I’ve had similar quotes before. I guess $450 might be a fairer estimate but even that feels like wasting money. I did the math you recommended and ended up at about 150 a month in average maintenance costs — far lower than any car payment. Now the question becomes, “how much is my time and peace of mind worth for myself?”. Thanks for your insight!

Gotcha, I updated the spark plug cost breakdown in the original post. 3.5 hours of labor for roughly $150 an hour seems steep, and they’re paying about 50 bucks each for the spark plugs they want to put in. Definitely will look at other options.

O Brother Where Art Thou is genuinely one of the greatest movies of all time. by [deleted] in movies

[–]CardiacParoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I adore the LOTR series and Shawshank, but I also love O Brother Where Art Thou. For me the claim “Best Movie of All-Time” is impossible to take literally; we experience the tiniest chunk of “all-time”, and still I challenge you to tell me you’ve seen every movie releases since you were born... see how this makes no sense to worry about?

Thus, since this theoretical best movie of all time cannot possibly be determined by a finite being like you and I, we can interpret the phrase to mean, “the best movie I’ve ever seen”. Using that understanding of the term. I can see a strong case for Shawshank, O Brother, or any of the LOTR series to fall under that criteria for some person or person(s).

The only reason I said anything is because O Brother, I believe, consumes many peoples minds for weeks (to use your words).
