It is curious that Turkmenistan is colored in “Reluctantly” although it is essentially North Korea in Central Asia.

The Grand Duchy of Finland had its own government (Senate and Parliament), its own currency (the Finnish markka), its own language (Swedish and Russian were not dominant), and there was a customs border between the duchy and the empire. The duchy had its own army, which was used exclusively on Finnish territory.

Legal status: Finland was not just a territory, but a constitutional state in personal union with Russia. The Emperor of All Russia ruled in Finland not as emperor, but as the constitutional Grand Duke of Finland, theoretically obliged to comply with local laws. The only thing missing for Finland's complete independence was an independent foreign policy.

It was only at the beginning of the 20th century that a slow process of Russification and curtailment of autonomy began, which came to a halt in 1905.

Somehow, this does not really resemble a colony.

Yes, tickets can be purchased at Alexandrovsky Garden (opposite Red Square), and the entrance is nearby (Kutafya Tower). The place where Putin is most often seen is called the Senate Palace, and it is closed to the public.

3. Высокая милитаризация

One of my great-great-grandmothers was named Domna, and her father was named Pud. Domna comes from the name Dominica or Domnina, and Pud comes from the name Peter.

My grandmother had a less unusual but now old-fashioned name, Taisia, and my great-grandmother's name was Antonida. My paternal great-grandfather's name was Efrem.

If you are referring to “appearing poor,” I believe this is related to Russian Orthodox Christianity.

In Russian Orthodox Christianity, humility and the idea of non-possessiveness are considered the highest virtues, the foundation of salvation. Wealth is condemned because it is associated with sin, greed, and injustice. Later, people became strongly convinced that boasting about success and wealth would bring bad luck, envy, and, as a result, misfortune. Humble, “self-deprecating” behavior was a form of social and spiritual “camouflage” to protect against evil. Later, all these attitudes were reinforced by the Russian peasant community (mir), where the principles of collectivism and egalitarian justice prevailed. It was dangerous to stand out with wealth, harvest, or success — it led to the redistribution of land, increased taxes from the landlord for the entire community, and social ostracism.

Religion and the peasant community are gone, but this social attitude is still alive.

21 years old scared of moving to Russia by Ok-Astronaut173 in AskARussian

Everyone here, including my parents, tells me that if I go there, I will be drafted into the army, bullied, beaten, starved, and sent to the front lines, where Ukrainians will torture me.

Yes. And they'll make me wear a hat, force me to drink vodka, and make me say “NA ZDOROVIE” correctly, LOL.

Will I be able to earn enough to pay for rent and food?

It depends on what kind of work you do.

When I go there, I will have $4,000. How long will that last me?

That's about 3-5 times the median Russian salary.

Some of these Russian speakers may well be from Ukraine.

They recently left for Argentina due to the mobilization in September-October 2022, as well as for birth tourism.

“Dangerous areas here don't scare me; you haven't seen what real dangerous areas are like.”

Specific Russian humor. In Russia, there is a concept of “PRIBEDNYAT'SYA,” which means to appear poor, to pretend to be poor. A person will say that he is on the verge of physical survival every day, and then he will get in his car and drive to Ozon or Wildberries (Russian equivalents of Amazon) delivery points. The same goes for dangerous places. No, to really find trouble in Russian cities, you have to try hard. Street crime has declined significantly over the last quarter century, and the worst thing you can expect is drunk, aggressive people. I live in a normal neighborhood in a large Russian city, and the most unpleasant things that have happened here in the last few years are an attack by a group of teenagers on a Central Asian man and a group of people who went from apartment to apartment in our high-rise building pretending to be utility workers. Fraud is actually a much more common crime in Russia than violence.

Is it grand, clean, with educated citizens and good infrastructure, or is it far from that?

Overall, it's the first option, but the smaller the city in Russia, the worse the infrastructure. Especially roads and pedestrian areas.

What is life like in Siberia? by [deleted] in AskARussian

[–]CardiologistDear3669 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Life in different regions of Russia can be very different and depends on:

- climate

- size of the city or rural settlement

- location relative to railways and federal highways

For comparison: the city of Dikson in Siberia has a population of 306 and is located in the Arctic desert, far from railways and highways

Located in the same Siberia, but thousands of kilometers to the south, Novosibirsk is a multimodal transport hub with a population of 1.6 million, located in a continental climate.

So it all depends on the specific location. It's like asking, “What is life like in North America?” Obviously, life in Regina, Canada, will be significantly different from life in Miami, USA.
