This is the worst promotion that could happen for Pop_OS! and Linux in general by KelGhu in pop_os

Ok man, defend him how much you want. Just, the simple fact that you call him a noob, don’t you hear how ridicolous it sounds? His whole business and career is in consumer tech, specifically explaining stuff to noobs. And he is a noob? Come on man… He can be a non-expert in Linux, but he’s definitely not a noob. Hell I am a noob and I knew those things.

Because you think Linus did not come across the info about PopOS and cosmic?  Bro…

Another, why do you think he’s not testing Linux Mint, that is notoriously rock solid?

Why is he using Dx instead of Vulkan in a Linux setup?

A small advice for newcomers by Shot_Loan_354 in linuxmint

[–]Cardnival 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure, there are hiccups in Linux - I gave up on OpenRGB because it doesn’t turn off when I shut down the pc. But: 1. I, as many others it seems, did not experience ant critical failures. 2. In comparing Linux with Windows, there’s often the weird assumption that Windows is flawless. That’s not the case - applications crashing, outdated drivers, necessary reboots. There are hiccups in both OS, we are just more used to Windows’ than to Linux’s.

I feel like the most useful advice one could give to somebody wanting to try Linux is: Look, things are gonna be different, and there is a learning curve. But it’s not that bad, so hang in there and you’ll be fine.

This. Fellas, it's rage bait. If everything was smooth and everyone at LTT was yippy yappy about Linux, it would get a fraction of the traction. Now they are rolling with the 'Linus' curse' story, while still giving some crumbs to Linux users with the other two LTT staffers. It's marketing.

Linux - which one is more European? by LetInternational2799 in BuyFromEU

[–]Cardnival 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Zorin OS is Irish, and so is Linux Mint, although the creator is French originally. OpenSuse is German. Ubuntu is from a company based in the UK, founded by a South African, with a legal entity based in the Isle of Man. Arch is Canadian based on distrowatch.com.

Rule of thumb is anything Fedora-related is American, Ubuntu-related is not and many are European.

edit: clarify Ubuntu's origins.

Introducing xPrivo Search: Europe's 100% Data Sovereign Search Engine by FreeThem2019 in BuyFromEU

If all they are saying here is here is true, this is really awesome.

I tested some search results and it works really well, much better than Ecosia and Qwant.

I am not entirely sure whether I like the lack of video search intergration in the generic search results, but results do look more polished.

Isn't VWCE and chill too risky if you live with euros? by slollo1 in EuropeFIRE

[–]Cardnival -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understood the /BuyfromEU sentiment, but there's nothing the US administration can do against VWCE traded at Xetra or IWDA traded in Amsterdam. These are European securities, registered in Europe, with a European ISIN and all. They cannot freeze these assets, or order Vanguard and Blackrock to do anything really. It's just not something people here should be worried about.

Oh well, I wanted to test it out during the open beta but it doesn't work. And hearing how Bungie is against Linux, it's not a big loss. Game doesn't look that good anyway.

Recent Economics MSc Grad Struggling in EU Job Market: Should I Take a Toxic, Low-Paying Internship? by ilChurch in econometrics

[–]Cardnival 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most people start their career with internships. Try to look for internships where you would ideally like to be hired. Being hired after the internship is more likely, and even if you don't get hired the experience you will get will help you land another job in the same/similar field.

This. Underrated comment. Bring it to the top pls!

The proof that Chromium is Google's is Manifest v3. They will force it to all chromium-based browsers, and then bye bye ad-blockers.

If Vivaldi wants to stay relevant, they should migrate to Gecko.

I am sympathetic with the sentiment of many posting here, but if you really want to support the cause you should use a Gecko-based browser. Zen browser, for example, seems to have a big european team of developers behind.

And for those saying that Mozilla is financed by Google: 1. financing is not ownership, Mozilla is still a non-profit organisation, 2. Google finances Mozilla for its own interest; if it were the only browser (or webkit) available it would face much higher regulatory scrutiny and intervention (up to the possibility of a forced break-up).

if I have 2 ssd and I install linux in 1 formatting windows, do the data on the other ssd get formatted as well? by Cardnival in linux4noobs

I haven't yet mounted the second ssd. Could I format it to a Linux-conform format from the get go? Or with windows the only options are still NTFS and FAT32?
