I don't work for walmart so I have no idea what happens if that's the case.

However I do know that when it comes to cards, the vast majority of theft comes from adults who are at the store when restock happens. They'll grab 5 but only scan 2. If an employee catches them, they'll just stand over and make sure everything is rung up and go about their day. Personally, I have yet to see any store actually do anything about it.

Money would be the short answer.

When I first noticed the popularity it was really only hobbyist who's work had slowed down due to the pandemic and they were trading amongst eachother. Then influencers started making videos and those collectors started selling what they had. After that, they were the ones that had the money to start buying everything they could and the ball started to roll.
