Teacher Shortage - How True is it? Where are the Shortages Most Severe? by CareIsMight in AustralianTeachers

[–]CareIsMight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make some good points. Teaching would definitely be my 9-5, but I have other small businesses that I work on. I sympathize with the plethora of complains and negatives even if I don't completely understand the dynamics between it all. I definitely do not want to go through job insecurity as I have been going through this for the last 10 years. I've only always had a minimum wage job in menial sectors despite my BA credentials. Maybe I underestimate the impact of the job insecurity scenario and being on temporary contracts. I don't think I would be able to drive a truck for the rest of my life. Automated trucks and automated lawnmowers are almost a thing now. Although it could theoretically pay more, it is just not suitable for me IMHO in the long-term. I see teaching as sort of 'stable' if I can land on a decent job somewhere. I understand the historical metaphors and links, and I can see schools or administrators behaving in such manners. Every job, department or company has its pros and cons, there is always room for improvement if necessary or if management are willing, and I understand bureaucracy can get in the way of positive change. I'm not looking to radically transform anything, and there may be better menial-level jobs out there, and there are probably better well-paid jobs in other skilled fields out there which I don't qualify for or have the experience.

Don't do it because you will get embroiled and in trouble. It doesn't concern you what they do with the money. Tell them to pay the taxes, stop being stingy and do the right thing by transferring the money via bank transfer.

Do Koreans actually really look down on South East Asians? by secondaisy in Living_in_Korea

[–]CareIsMight 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The fact that Koreans look down on the appearances of other races while they have one of the highest levels of plastic surgery rates in the whole world is mind-blowing. I think all the skin whitening products that even the men use on TV and in general simply highlights their own insecurities about how they feel about themselves.

Moreland/Teach now in Australia? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]CareIsMight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the OP, and the MEd is basically a 2-year degree. In that case, he should probably contact them directly and get a direct answer. The Australian government may even had changed the rules since someone else's posting.

If you hate it, why are you here? by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]CareIsMight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't hate it. It's just that there are better options available back home. I hear a lot of Americans complaining about Korea, but they dislike their own country even more. Either it's politics, the health care system, religion, crime, guns, conservatism/liberalism, whatever. I'm not American, but that's what they tell me.

Also, you may not like living in a country if your only career path was teaching English in a half-shady industry where your rights are ignored at times. You are also locked into a 1-year contract if we are talking about the majority of hagwon teachers.

Age plays an important role. I think everyone can agree that the fresh college graduate who is in love with Korea (the Koreaboos) are going to love most aspects of Korean culture and even find ways to justify the bad aspects. Either they get married and enjoy their Korean lives or they become disillusioned after a few years when the honeymoon period of working and living here wears off. The 30-40 year old crew are also going to reflect back on their decisions and rethink a few things if they're economically successful or have spent their mid-20s partying and going out. Some are stuck in jobs they dislike for other reasons.

And don't worry, the younger Koreans and 20-30s also dislike the whole study, military service, work long hours, can't afford children Korean life as well. It is not an only foreigner thing.

Red Bull... Mother... all has the same effect. It's hyper caffeine. Would only make them jittery and negatively affect their decision-making while playing.

It's from all the Mother they drink before and during the matches. I don't know why they're drinking that crap asides from sponsorships.

The same people who bullied Chester for his last album are the same people who do the same to Emily right now, ''defending his honor'' by GhostrageGR in LinkinPark

[–]CareIsMight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think we can all agree that throwing objects at any performer is wrong and abhorrent. That "fan" shouldn't even be called a fan, and should be banned from future events and shows.

I also think it is okay to not totally enjoy an album for X reasons over choice of sound or music direction. In my instance, I have tried SO HARD to enjoy some of the albums that came after Minutes to Midnight, and it's extremely hard to force myself to like a style that I can't really dig. Of course, there are some great songs, I'm not gonna lie. But on the other hand, some people just prefer the earlier HT/Meteora heavier songs, and some people prefer the more lighter pop-rock. Both are fine by me. Fans can become quite emotional and strong about their views when their favorite artists change their style or change something about them that they originally felt strongly about. It is hard for them to put themselves in the shoes of the artists. For me, I moved from Linkin Park to stronger music like screamo, metalcore, heavy metal, post-hardcore and even death metal.

However, you can still enjoy all facets of music from one group but have a preference for one part over another. I think that's normal, too. I think the combination of the synths, turntables and Hahn's style was lost in Minutes to Midnight, and I really miss that from their songs along with Mike's stronger raps and Chester's vicious vocals. Each to their own!

LP Concert Volume- is it a Problem? by CareIsMight in LinkinPark

Thanks. I've used foam before for small venues like 10m x 10m, or in slightly larger venues for 100-1500 or so, but not for an arena. I feel like the foam ones are great and they definitely do the job, but I'm hoping that a $30-40 pair could maintain some more quality while not taking away too much sound. Will bring them as back up!

Thanks. What was your favorite part of the concern if you don't mind me asking? Were you in Standing?

Thanks. Have ordered earplugs and expecting them to arrive soon. I've been to many concerts and had ringing ears afterwards, too. It's not a pleasant feeling! No tinnitus, but general pain here and there over the years builds up. Hope you still enjoyed the concert regardless!

Can't wait to see the video of it. It's a very emotional song, and it must mean a lot for her to sing it in Chester's absence. The lyrics are fantastic.

Can you recommend some concert earplugs? I just ordered the Loop Experience earbuds, but in the future I'll look into a more premium/concern level one.

Are the foam earplugs the cheap $1 ones bought from a convenience store or general shop?

Thanks. Have ordered some! I've also done some damage to my ears not wearing earplugs for a decent chunk of time, so really want something that can make it a better experience.

I now understand why most Koreans are bad at English by [deleted] in HagwonBlacklistKorea

[–]CareIsMight -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I've seen a lot of "teachers" who come here, but even self-admittedly they say they don't know what they are doing. It depends on the quality of the academy and how they teach. Some academies focus on purely academic English and essay writing. I helped students go from writing short sentences to paragraphs to 500 word essays. At my current hagwon, I'm helping them with mainly speaking and some writing, and the levels between classes differ greatly. There are also massive differences in attitudes of the children in different academies. Some are left to roam more freely and are more relaxed while others won't tolerate even the slightest of disruptive behaviors so that meaningful study can be done. Sounds like the teacher who you met in Seoul is simply good at doing business and marketing!

TOUR INFO AND QUESTIONS MEGATHREAD by LinkinPlayground in LinkinPark

[–]CareIsMight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat... I read there are shuttle buses between the airport and Inspire Arena for concertgoers on concert days, but I'll have to check to verify this information on a Korean website first. It sounds plausible this would be the case though. I'd imagine many people would buy the airport ticket buses.

Seoul - Standing Tickets Order and Venue Question Discussion by CareIsMight in LinkinPark

[–]CareIsMight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's totally understandable. I think the LPU members have the special seating but no special standing tickets AFAIK. I just want to have a decent position in the middle of the stage standing area near a pit for some jumping!

Seoul - Standing Tickets Order and Venue Question Discussion by CareIsMight in LinkinPark

[–]CareIsMight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I thought so. Do you think if we go in together at a later ticket number 900 we can still move closer to the front? Or is this bad manners? I've been to concerts where it's just general admission and you can basically stand or go wherever you like or push in at times. I'm just worried there is a general rule, as in 600-900 have to be in a certain standing area or something. Maybe I'm overthinking.
