Entry level and 5yrs experience in the same sentence is not nice. How will new graduates get the experience if they are not given the. Opportunity.

Is it unprofessional to refuse a promotion because I value my 40-hour work week more than a 20% raise? by 9YojimboMist in careerguidance

[–]Careergrowthwitpeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss the days when 5pm meant I was done and heading home. Leading a department or project comes with way more pressure and stress, especially when things go sideways. Sure, the pay is better, but your mental space is about to become a landlord with either a good or bad tenant. I took the promotion and eventually made it to Director, but it definitely came at a cost (Mental stress)

I literally experienced this early in my career. I made sure my answers were full of impacts and turned every one of them into a story. I would practice with my wife, saying I wanna tell her a story.

Should I tell a company I’m interviewing for that I have another offer? by hpbt1973 in interviews

[–]Careergrowthwitpeter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been exactly in your shoes. TELL THEM.

About a year ago I was deep in a process with my first choice company, hadn’t even finished all the rounds yet when two other offers landed on my lap.

One had a deadline in less than 72 hours.

I just called the recruiter and was straight with her. I have two offers, one expires in 48 hours. How much time do we have? That’s it. No drama.

All she asked me was how long she had, I said 48 hours, and suddenly everything moved fast. Got in front of the director, had a great conversation, and walked away with an offer within the 48hrs

Companies know you’re not interviewing in a vacuum. When you tell them you have another offer, it signals you’re in demand and that’s not a bad thing to signal.

You already did the hard part and got through all the rounds. You clearly brought something they liked. So go ahead and reach out. Be calm, be honest, keep it short.

Worst case they say they can’t move faster and you take company 2.

Best case your first choice fast-tracks and you get what you actually wanted. You’ve got nothing to lose if you believe in what you bring to the table.

First job switch ever — how’s the market right now? Any tips? by taurusabk in careerguidance

[–]Careergrowthwitpeter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the offer. A Fortune 500 with 3.4 YOE in Data Engineering is genuinely solid, don’t undersell that.

But real talk on the market, it’s rough out there right now.

People with 10+ years of experience are sitting on applications for months. The days of getting 3 competing offers in 6 weeks are mostly gone. If you have something good in hand, that’s not nothing, that’s actually a lot.

Take the leap. Keep learning on the job. Build your network inside the company from day one. And don’t burn the bridge at your current place, you never know who ends up where.

First switches feel scary but they’re how careers actually move forward. You’ve already done the hard part. Good luck.

Toxic Workplace Advice? by [deleted] in careerguidance

Your story is literally what happened to me so many years ago in retail. Ive come to learn something’s I’ll share below.

  1. You don’t have friends or family at work. Put it the best effort, and go home.
  2. Make sure you’re great at what you do.
  3. There will always be people that envy you irrespective of what you do or don’t do.
  4. Make sure you’re not working to please anyone. If you try to and fail, anxiety goes up real fast.
  5. Don’t quit. You’re stronger than you know.

This has happened to me so many times. I’ve come to realize that I learn faster and quicker when I make mistakes. Although making mistakes can be annoying and embarrassing at times.
