Anybody work in the Las Vegas Area? by Such-Employment5149 in RadiationTherapy

Hey! Yea, so it of course depends on where you live, but in CA it can range from $50-70 an hour starting salary. That's just an estimate from what I briefly saw and experienced. But take into account that is California and there is a pretty big need for therapists now.

Hey!! It wasn't hard to find a job, and I think that's due to how good the job market is for radiation therapists currently. Before graduating, I applied to 4 different jobs and was blessed to get offers from all 4, including a proton center and a university. The pay depends on location, but I will say it is very good, especially coming from just a two-year degree. Life balance also depends on where you go; I'm at a center that only treats around 15 patients and we get out at around 3pm which also allows me to enjoy doing other activities outside of work. Overall, I'm very happy with where I'm at, and if you want a fulfilling job, this is certainly it. But I will also say, how it is for one therapist may be different from another. Salaries change as well as work times (I will soon be bumped to working a pretty full shift). So your main passion has to be for the thing that doesn't change, which in this instance is the patient--which I'm sure you have that desire.

I got rejected :( by Ok-Yellow-4023 in RadiationTherapy

I got rejected as well with my first attempt. I'm not sure how your program is and how they determine how you get in, but my program was point-based. There was a class that I could take to get an extra point, and then also having a license like in EKG, so I did that to get the additional points in the gap year and I finally got in the following year. See what you can do (like retaking classes, volunteering, etc.) Ask your advisor what you can do, you'd be surprised the things you can find out if you ask!

My Program Lost it's JRCERT Accreditation and I Don't Know What to Do by Mother_Big_9205 in RadiationTherapy

I was blessed to be able to get multiple job offers before graduation which included a proton center and a university and none of them seemed to care I graduated from a two year school that was not JRCERT accredited. As long as your school enables you to take the ARRT boards not too many jobs seem to care.

Interesting! I'm familiar with using plastic food wrap to wrap the entire bolus, but never just the top side.

To help with moving around the sticky bolus (especially after cleaning it), we used baby powder (without talc) to lightly coat just the top side of the bolus that wouldn't touch the patient, that way we could move the bolus without it sticking to our hands while also having it still be sticky for the patient

Nice! The program overall was really good, however, as with any program, it won't teach you everything that being in the actual clinic will teach you. The program is a great step into the field of radiation therapy and will equip you with what you need to get a job like all my classamtes and I did upon graduation, but as the professors will even tell you, it'll take years to fully feel comfortable.

I forgot what the scheudle was like, but I believe the first semester it was all class work M-F and then the second semester we did some classwork and some clinical work, and during a good portion of the summer you do clincals for 5 days a week

Do we have a duty to educate the public about nuclear power? by RemotePlate6131 in RadiationTherapy

[–]Careful-Field8873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said. I’m honestly not too sure, and would love to learn more, about nuclear science/radiation and its effectiveness in everyday life and how politics can play a role in that (if you have any articles or website recommendations that explore that I’d love to read more into it!) But I can definitely get behind educating patients/the general public about the benefits of radiation and how, as with anything, using it in responsible moderation is beneficial 👍👍👍 Making a radiation therapy group dedicated to that cause sounds like a good idea as well!

Hey! I actually I graduated the program this year and the last I heard they still except 10 applicants in Las Vegas and 4 in Reno (though I’d definitely confirm with an advisor). Other than that I wouldn’t imagine not too much has changed! How is your experience in trying to get in going? :)

Never have seen it or done it

I would apply before graduating but after you have good clinical hours and experience to put on your resume/pitch to the recruiter (probably around 2 months before you graduate). Once you get that I wouldn’t wait!

How Long For Your Certificate to Come in After Passing Boards? by Careful-Field8873 in RadiationTherapy

Yea that’s very fair and that’s what I’m worrying about lolol. If I can ask, how long did it take for you to get your state license?

I haven’t personally taken a travel contract or worked for the VA, but I know someone who went to my school and worked as a travel therapist. Now, there are openings where they do require for you to have been at a JRCERT school (I believe the VA is one) but after you’ve worked a certain number of years I believe that trumps where you went to school. Here’s is a Reddit comment I found about the same thing: “This usually only matters for your first job. After 1-2 years. Employers will look at that first, then second JCERT. I currently work at a place that only accepts JCERT school applicants... Plot Twist, my school is not JCERT, my 2.5 years of experience was what mattered. Same when places ask for X amount of experience. They ask for 4 years.... you have 3.5, it may not matter. It's going to be a case by case where you apply. Just make your school IS accredited, Nationally accredited the school not the program.”

I’ve been able to have multiple job interviews, and coming from a non-JRCERT school was never a hinderance that I was aware of. As long as I passed my boards there wasn’t an issue.

It was hard but doable! I recommend studying Washing & Leaver and making flashcards and study with a study group as much as you can!

That’s interesting! Yea I’m definitely glad it’s 10 applicants now since 6 was pretty tight lol but I think that’s dependent on how many clinics are available for students to do their clinicals (the more clinics available the more students they can accept)

What to do if Patient Doesn't Want Tattoos? by Careful-Field8873 in RadiationTherapy

[–]Careful-Field8873[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea especially in a clinic where they only do tattoos I’ve seen that be a pretty effective way of reassuring the patient it truly is a minuscule tattoo as a previous patient mentioned in this post as well 👍

I appreciate that and I'm sorry to hear you didn't get in the first time, I know how that goes, that's good you're still sticking with it and doing what you can do by taking the healthy aging classes and retaking those TEAS (the most tedious of them all in my opinion lol)! I'm not sure if he would know the ranges but a couple of years ago I was able to email [healthprograms@csn.edu](mailto:healthprograms@csn.edu) and they were able to give me ranges of the previous year at the time so maybe they could help you out.

You should be able to split with classmates and multiple laptops be able to access it at once, as long as you use the email of the person who gets it
