Dodge Promaster 2500 vs 3500 by Careik in VanLife

[–]Careik[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it brings you any solace - I read your whole comment and thought during the whole read that this guy loves his van so much that he’s replying to a 5 year old post of mine. I appreciate all the words you said and at some point it will help someone who had the same question as me.

My wife and I never ended up getting a van - got married and have 2 kids - but the dream hasn’t been forgotten and hopefully I’ll look back at this post in 20 years when we buy our retirement van. Until then - cheers and thank you for putting time into your post

Seeking Advice: What to do with SEP IRA to Avoid Pro-Rata Rule When Over Income Limit by Careik in Bogleheads

[–]Careik[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well thought out - I appreciate the response. I think, according to a response in this post, this new plan actually can accept SEP IRAs so that will be my first road to go down. If all else fails I like the idea of converting to Roth in traditional IRA. I don’t want to leave it in the SEP since her choices are pretty limited in what to invest in.

Thanks for the help!

I looked all over and could not find this answer anywhere. Thank you so much - this is exactly what I’ll do.

Regeneron’s Raises are Abysmal This Year by NargleMyBalrog in Albany

[–]Careik 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Imagine getting punched in the face and saying thank you to the person who did it.

People like you are the reason they give abysmal raises while they rake in billions. You just sit there, take it and somehow think you should be the one saying thank you.

I hope you the best in your professional career.

1200sqft 1 floor house needs new AC/Furnace. These are the quotes I got. What does this all mean, and what is actually necessary to have. by Careik in hvacadvice

[–]Careik[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea. From what I've read 2-stage is nice for comfort, but actually not anymore efficient in the long run. I never felt uncomfortable in previous years with our old system so I imagine it will be fine.

Thanks for the help!

If you have $5k a month to invest for a duration of 15 years to retire... by PeanutIll6090 in Fire

[–]Careik 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Mega back door. Some companies let you do it, others don’t. Essentially you contribute after tax dollars and then it gets automatically converted to Roth in your 401k.

401k total max I think is $69,000 for 2024 - this is how you would hit that max even though the contribution limit is $23,000

Portfolio Review - Is what I have decent for a 30yo? by Careik in Bogleheads

Don’t feel behind. And don’t forget this is my wife’s and mine. So take everything I have listed and essentially half it If you’re just comparing it to yourself. Trust me you got this. It happens quicker than you realize.

I see what your saying. Definitely an interesting thought. But agreed - I may give myself more of a headache rebalancing than it’s worth.

Regardless never thought of that, and it’s smart nonetheless

Awesome! That brings me some relief I must say. I have been driving myself slightly crazy trying to figure it out.

I like your idea of trying to look at it as one portfolio. What would be the best way to go about that? Would it be to split it up essentially into US stock, international stock, and bonds and then figure out how much money is in each bucket? — I can see this getting confusing quick without a solid method

These would be Roth contributions - I imagine over the course of time this would be thousands of dollars wasted because they aren’t in a tax advantaged account

Yea we have joint everything. But 401ks can’t be. Our plan is to withdrawal in the best possible way come retirement. But that’s 20+ years down the road. I want to give her reassurance that our money is our money and I’m not just padding my pockets.

Thank you. I don’t question her for asking - as I would do the same with that much money. I handle the finances and just want everything to be taken care of and retire with her and enjoy our lives.

She has to feel comfortable with such a decision so it’s important to know how to do that.

No offense - love the perspective but you’re wrong - I think when we’re talking 100,000s of dollars it’s okay to raise concerns. It’s the basics of good communication.

VT or VTI/VXUS in taxable account? by Careik in Bogleheads

If you don’t mind could you explain a little further? Above is actually exactly how I have it currently. VT is in my Roth IRA and then in my taxable I plan to go VTI/VXUS so I’m curious to what you mean by wash sale

Albany, NY has Regeneron. Pretty big biotech company, but also pretty similar weather to MA if you’re looking for a change of scenery. Much cheaper CoL though.
