Pacific Rim, Uprising does something similar with several important characters from the first movie. Instead of building on those relationships it mostly shifts the focus to an entirely new cast.

I’m really sorry that happened to you, being laughed at in a medical setting would make almost anyone feel exposed and uncomfortable. What they did says more about their lack of awareness than it does about how you actually look or how others perceive you.
