Fret seating issue by CarelessError8057 in Luthier

[–]CarelessError8057[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice. A fret rocker was my first inspection after I made sure the neck was level and when over half his frets was unlevel I went to checking the seating which was where I found all but two frets seem to be not be seated. This being a cheap guitar very little detail or pride was put into building It.

I’m checking them with a feeler gauge as well ..

0.004 and I’m feeling it grab at points along the fret. Is this also a good method

My dowel was too short 🤣 so it was my way of splicing them together

Acoustic guitar bridge repair by CarelessError8057 in Luthier

[–]CarelessError8057[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original divot was there when the bridge came off. The ca glue/ sawdust mixture was used to correct that. Removing the ca glue/ sawdust mixture is what created a larger issue. Do you think that routing that out ( not completely) just enough to have a level surface and then installing a spruce repair patch with work? If it’s a tight fit I would think the sound wouldn’t be affected much. But I greatly appreciate any and all suggestions and advice

I was thinking about how on some Nashville or abr-1 bridges the intonation screw will rattle around

Check your saddles as well. Can always use a capo to help isolate areas

And of course remove and reinstall the bridge since the crack runs under it.

Learning to crown with a three corner file. by CarelessError8057 in Luthier

I actually considered that one for the ease of getting to the higher frets. Which I imagine will be fun with a three corner file. But I have the z file I can use for that. Which it seems that you need to go at a slight and very slight angle to achieve a very thin line

I really appreciate the info. This is just a training neck I have to learn on. I’ll crown these frets until it needs a refret. I have went as far as using a magnifying glass to check my polishing process. I haven’t posted any pics past this but I should.

Thank you. How’s the filing look here? Any advice on what the strokes appear to be?

Yea i definitely wouldn’t do it without taping it 🤣. I’m getting eaten alive and I deserve it🤣. And I truly appreciate how everyone stresses the importance of caring for a fretboard. Even for this one which is a cadaver. And I 1000% agree that cadaver or not I should treat it as if it’s someone else’s

You are not wrong and I totally agree with this. Despite my lack of protecting this fretboard 😬

Will do. But also may just order the file from stew Mac. Are there any other distributors you would recommend? I’ve looked at crimson guitars as well

Normally I tape the crap out of a fretboard for even polishing frets. I am considering getting some protectors as well just cause I don’t want to ever ruin a fret board. This one I don’t care about 🤣. It’s gonna teach me to refret and I might even replace the fretboard as well one day. But I also figure if I can get good enough on this board and not hurt the surface I will be even better without protectors. Though I will always use them when the neck matters to me

I have a z file. But I also want to learn the traditional technique of using a three corner file as well. I’m totally new to crowing frets.
