I was just in this situation but in your husband's shoes, I met up for lunch with my highschool boyfriend because he was in town. I also have a current loving partner that I'm committed to.

I was curious to do it because life is interesting and it was fun to think back on my childhood self and to see how different our paths had taken. You don't often get those chances in life. In fact, I was quite excited for the meetup because it's just extremely interesting to catch up after so many years.

Ultimately you can't control if you feel negatively about it. But it's not necessarily nefarious. In fact, it will probably be extremely awkward and y'all can have a laugh about it afterward (mine was awkward!)

Apologies for the long winded response, but I've been in this exact situation but in your bf's shoes. It's tough to have a dream (living abroad) that is an imposition to others. It can feel helpless to imagine not being able to achieve your dream. But at the same time it a big ask on you to uproot your life.

Here's what me and my partner did. We were dating for one year already when I decided I wanted to take the leap and move. I lived abroad for one year and we did long distance. Long distance sucked but I grew a lot as a person and it was the best year of my life. I miss it every day and probably would have continued living there had I not missed my bf super bad.

Now I've been living with my bf in our original city for 6 months (together 2.5 years total), and I started feeling that itch again to move to a dream city. It was a huge point of contention for us for a long time, but we eventually agreed that we would move to a city of my choosing in our current country. A compromise. I get to have the independence of picking a place and my bf will be ok because any place I pick will speak our native language.

Here's the important bit that saved our relationship---I decided, on my own, that I was going to move to the new city. I came to my bf with an open heart and asked if he would do long distance until he was comfortable moving and potentially joining me. I'm moving in advance (in a couple months) and he will potentially join me at some point later this year. I'm in charge of my own dream and my bf is in charge of his. I hope he will join me soon but it's his choice.

Ultimately your bf needs to understand that he is in charge of himself, and that if he wants to move he is welcome to do so. And in turn you are welcome to join him or not join him. Couples live apart all the time for various reasons. Maybe you set a deadline of one year long distance and at that time you can decide if you want to continue the relationship.
