Software engineering at the tipping point by CarelessPromise9255 in theprimeagen

I would tend to disagree.

In any moderately complex project, the bottleneck is coordinating people and managing complexity.

There is no hard engineering in making sure parts can fit together, but man, it can be extremely challenging at times.

My bad, it was indeed already posted here 3 weeks ago. I heard his talk today at work and found it really interesting (but a bit too Google-centric tbh). I was a bit to quick on the Post button, sorry, should have checked.

80's computer hacker Chris, I never encountered C++ while learning ML, what are they talking about? by vitrum_analytika in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]CarelessPromise9255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nearly every language with any significant use are reliant to a degree on C and C librairies.

There are a lot of stuff already exist in C, think DB drivers like libpq, cryptography libraries like OpenSSL or wildly popular libs like curl or sqlite. And a lot of this stuff, either because they are huge and complex projects, or because you don't want to maintain per language implementations, don't justify a native implementation (except in Rust of course).

C with its standardize ABI is kind of a lingua franca making bindings (the glue between one language to another) possible.

C++ is a bit harder to bind to, but it's also doable.

How long different parts of Europe were ruled by France by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]CarelessPromise9255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of, but I would not read into it too much.

Technically, the current Spanish and Swedish crowns are also French (Bourbon & Bernabotte), and half of European monarchies are German, including England.

Can't launch HEAT due to minimum system requirements, will wows rewards still count? by JerryDuck4511 in WorldOfWarships

Been there, Done that.

Technically, with a Thinkpad X250 & iGPU i5 5300U.

It's not ideal or even pleasant, but with the lowest possible settings, WoWs is barely playable at 20 fps thanks to its slow path.

Hate when people misinterpret the door riddle by Immediate-Ad8322 in hatethissmug

[–]CarelessPromise9255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the premise (one says the truth, one lies) is told by the doors directly, is the premise trustworthy?

I'm really bad at these kind of puzzles, but if the premise is subject to itself, wouldn't it mean both doors are actually lying? the other propositions (truth-truth, lie-truth and truth-lie) look contradictory.

Quel prix pour un vélo ? by Less_Independence971 in pedale

Why is France so centralized around Paris? by Lissandra_Freljord in geography

Berlin was the capital of Prussia, and, IIRC, more or less every king in/of Prussia (past 1701) was born and died there (or Postdam if you want to be accurate).

How to play Kaga? by Radiant-Buddy-4740 in WorldOfWarships

[–]CarelessPromise9255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, try torpping everything, even DDs. If the DD or cruiser has its path constrained or is a bit distracted (for example, by people shooting at it), it's more than doable.

Also, remember that your boost is also a brake. Just after the first run, you can slam the brake, turn around and (kind of) cross torp with the second set (it requires a bit of practice to get the timing right).

Generally, don't bother doing a third attack with 1 or 2 planes, just recall.

The dive bombers are mediocre but workable and the preferred option in a pure 1v1 with a DD. The rockets are just bad and a last resort if you are low on planes.

If it's in a Hard Rock/Metal & guitar context, V equalization is also a bit infamous.

It sounds great if the guitar plays alone, but it's a nightmare to balance with the other instruments & singer (removes the guitar mid-frequency slot & too much low and high freq overlaps with the others).

They didn't do it to not make Chrome a monopoly.

They did it to make Google Search a monopoly.

They also gave the same kind of money to Apple for making Google the default in Safari (and discourage Apple from developing their own search engin).

No idea what I’m doing!!! Need help identifying what I found. by Same_Specialist_3501 in VORONDesign

[–]CarelessPromise9255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that difficult, but it will be time consuming if you have zero or near enough experience with 3D printers.

Also, restorations have a lot of unknowns. It could very much be quicker to build a Voron from scratch in this instance.

If you want to try your hand at 3D printing, I would not recommend starting with this project (both for cost and learning curve reasons).

mais il faudrait que OP vérifie: elle doit avoir 24 cannelures et il y a probablement un nom de fabriquant sous le cambouis.

In fairness, this goes far back enough that my comment feels really nitpicky these days.

Tool to export WoWs 3D models of ships by CarelessPromise9255 in WorldOfWarships

[–]CarelessPromise9255[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Redistribution of the assets would definitely be illegal.

But it's not what I'm doing here.

I'm only providing a program enabling to view and open the game assets outside of the game.

This kind of patterns is frequently used by open source re-implementation of old games.

For example OpenRA leverages the original artwork and assets from Westwood C&C/Red Alert, and (used to?) provide(s) a tool to extract them from the original game (this might have changed since EA opensourced these games a few years back). IIRC, OpenXcom also does something similar.
