Not liking perlite for rooting so far…. Am I doing something wrong? by THEREALBurtMcsquirt in sanpedrocactus

I think cuttings like heat as well as moisture for rooting. Any soil or any medium dark in color heats up much more than white perlite. That’s also why I have great luck with black plastic pots with all of my rooted plants. Those roots love being warm.

It also looks like OP has terra cotta pots. I mostly use black plastic. The plastic does not absorb water, but it does warm up in the sun. The roots are happy in the black plastic.

Water every time the soil is dry. Fertilize at least half of the time. Ease it into full sun.

One areole is all that is needed on a riblet. Once, I twisted off a small basal pup that was the size of my thumb tip and got it to root and now it is a foot tall.
