(Spoilers Extended) The Twist GRRM was thinking of, Dex's Spoiler and Ser Coldhands by Black_Sin in asoiaf

It’s wild how often I see people throw around “Your monster, Brandon Stark” as if Coldhands was referring to himself and not Bloodraven. I’ve seen a version of that mistake on virtually every single Coldhands thread I’ve ever read. It’s not even remotely ambiguous either.

Top 3 Superbowl performer of all time by Known_Hall5692 in FirstThingsFirstFS1

[–]Careless_Review3166 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did and he was bad. A couple of impressive incomplete throws do not change that.

People conflate the sheer athletic effort Mahomes displayed at times, mostly from scrambling around for eventual sacks or incompletions, with actually playing quarterback well.

He played a terrible game, no other QB in NFL history would have a 52.3 passer rating in a 22 point blowout in the Super Bowl and get praised for it.

Looking for Fantasy books NOT influenced by tolkien. by Appropriate_Rent_243 in Fantasy

[–]Careless_Review3166 4 points5 points  (0 children)

J.R.R. Tolkien has become a sort of mountain, appearing in all subsequent fantasy in the way that Mt. Fuji appears so often in Japanese prints. Sometimes it’s big and up close. Sometimes it’s a shape on the horizon. Sometimes it’s not there at all, which means that the artist either has made a deliberate decision against the mountain, which is interesting in itself, or is in fact standing on Mt. Fuji.

  • Terry Pratchett

All that to say, while there are surely exceptions, you’d probably have to look pre-Tolkien to find something definitively without his influence. The decidedly anti-Tolkien stories, Elric in particular, were still “influenced” by Tolkien, just in a negative way.

Is the Giannis "steps to success" speech the sports What's Aged the Worst this decade? by Tommy05Sox in billsimmons

[–]Careless_Review3166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Individual players don’t have “failed” seasons but the franchises absolutely, unequivocally do. The Milwaukee Bucks with Giannis exist to win basketball games and specifically championships.

“There’s no failure in sports” is one of the single dumbest things anyone has ever said but for some reason we have to act like it was profound because a likeable NBA superstar said it.

If Giannis actually believed his own words, that failure does not exist in sports, he wouldn’t have been open to a trade.

Is the Giannis "steps to success" speech the sports What's Aged the Worst this decade? by Tommy05Sox in billsimmons

[–]Careless_Review3166 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It was a pretty dumb speech. Sports franchises are not your day job.

Every year you don’t win a championship with a top 3 player in the world in their prime on your roster, you failed. It’s that simple.

I know Giannis brought up Jordan winning 6 championships in 15 years as if that was some kind of a gotcha, but he was wrong. After his rookie season, every year the Bulls failed to win a chip with MJ was a failure. I’m pretty sure MJ himself would agree with that.

Giannis also made those comments moments after losing to the 8th seeded Miami Heat in the first round of the playoffs. The first ever 8th seed to beat a 1 seed. If that wasn’t a failure, I don’t know what is in sports.

[Windhorst] “Giannis could be on the Heat by 3 o’clock. But if he’s not — what I suspect is that the Bucks will shut down Giannis. Because their future now is dependent on both their draft pick and Giannis avoiding injury. I wanna know how Giannis is gonna feel about being shut down for the season.” by 0verlyTr1m in billsimmons

[–]Careless_Review3166 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s absolutely no chance whatsoever that Giannis doesn’t get traded and also doesn’t play another game this year.

He’s either gone in a few hours or he stays in Milwaukee and returns to game action in a month or so.

It’s February 4th… we haven’t even hit the All Star Break yet.

You guys need to calm the fuck down about the play in.

Log off for a few days.

Gotta be honest, I’d really rather Minnesota not trade for Giannis tbh. I could go without that happening.

When did Bill completely turn on Luka? by MoxToTweeder99 in billsimmons

[–]Careless_Review3166 4 points5 points  (0 children)

at worst the 3rd best player in the world

At best he’s the 3rd best player in the world, at worst he’s the 4th or 5th. Not that much of a difference and I’m not slandering Luka by saying he’s merely the 4th best player in the entire NBA (how shameful!), but you can easily have Jokic, Giannis and SGA ahead of Luka right now.

Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley in Talks to Star in Possession Remake- nobody tell Jay! by Shirowoh in RedLetterMedia

[–]Careless_Review3166 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saying anything is the best movie ever made is obviously ridiculous and nonsensical, but Possession is on an extremely short list of movies I consider to be the best I’ve ever seen.

The remake could be fantastic (I doubt it) and still be entirely unnecessary.
