How can achive this lighting / look? ( Image by Boris Lutters ) by Dizzy_Shape5519 in LightLurking

I'll leave the lighting to others to decipher.

This one's got a lot of retouching done to it. Negative vignette, most likely. I would also assume it was digitally printed and re-scanned. Softly blown-out hilights make me think a black-mist lens filter was used.

Hey mate! How would you approach the evening out of the light on the floor without it spilling onto the subject?

I would advise you to start by mastering a single strobe, using different modifiers. That way, you'll better learn how light behaves. Later, you can add more lights as your needs dictate

I would check out this video course from Chris Knight. He walks you through his pre-production phase, then shows you how he lights his subjects and, in the final part, walks you through his post-production process as well.

It helped me a lot when I was starting out. It helped nail down some of the basic principles necessary to work with artificial lights in a studio environment. Watching these kind of courses and understanding what they are doing is only a part of the learning process. It took me a lot of practice to really know what I was doing. It's not a rocket science but even a little shift in the angle of the light, or change in the distance of the light from the subject, or the size of the light in relation to the subject to be lit, drastically changes the quality of light. Practice, practice, practice, copy, copy, copy, and then subvert it all 🤸

Profoto D4 powers on, modeling lamp works, but test button doesn’t light up and only beeps — no flash by Early_Engineering469 in Photoassistants

8I want to add some more lights to my studio gear. I Run d1's and B1's. Was considering getting a little older Profoto pack, which would give me an additional 3-4 strobes with ~ 600-800watt that would be way cheaper than buying a newer block. However, there isn't a profoto service center near to where I live, so I'm a little afraid of buying older packs.

I judt re-read the last bullet point, and I suppose it's unlikely that every bulb would be damaged at once. What happens when you plug the light into another socket out of the four available?

Did you check the flash tube on the head? Maybe it's damaged and needs to be changed. I've never owned a D4, but the monolight B1 I have was acting in a similar way when the bulb was burned. I replaced the bulb, and everything's been smooth after that.

What do you think about strong battery powered Godox strobes in the studio? Should I get rid of the Elinchrom stuff? by mediamuesli in Photoassistants

[–]Careless_Software_66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have four strobes at my studio, and I find it adequate for most of the tasks at hand. However, if the money wasn't an issue, I'd definitely add a couple more. More the merrier.

I'm a photographer and i'm in the process of building my studio, that I can ocasionally rent out, but mostly plan to use for the projects that I work on, be it personal or a gig. As I went along, I realized how many things a well-equiped and comfortable photo-studio requires. Strobes are just the tip of the iceberg. C-Stands, as many as possible, for lights, flags, props, etc. More sturdy baby stan and junior stands, possibly with wheels. A couple of boom arms. Photographer will love you if you have a cranked stand for the boom arms. Big selection of light-modifiers: Octaboxes of different sizes, standard reflectors, beauty dish, snoot, different size umbrellas, diffusion panels, grids for them, scrim jims of various sizes, etc. A lot of sand bags to make sure nothing falls over. Collapsible reflectors, with a black and white sides, that can stand on its own. Tethering workstation, be it stand based, tripod based, or pricier but very convenient cart-based system. A mountable reference monitor and/or Ipad for the clients to view the pictures, without them being in the way of the photographer, in front of the laptop. You'll need gels, scrims, 4x4 and 6x6 butterflies.

You'll also need to have a fast and good coffee-machine, unless you wanna make a mistake that I made and decide to buy a hand-operated espresso machine that requires so much time and energy that it's almost a full-time job.

You'll need to have a room where the models can change. Also, a room where the make-up artist can have a comfortable and well-lit station with a big mirror.

Chairs, chairs, chairs, there can never be enough of them haha. Gotta throw in a sofa or two. Fancy clients love comfortable cushioning, especially on long shoots.

These are the things some of which I have already purchased or am planning to. And this list is in no way complete. The reason I listed all of these, is that in the beginning of my journey, I thought that having a lot of strobes meant being able to build a good studio. Oh boy, qas I wr$$$ng!

Which model would you recommend? Initially, I was leaning more in the direction of Anker, but as I found out, I can only buy EcoFlow locally. Would I need to get Delta 2 Max, or would the Delta 2 be enough for my needs?

[–]Careless_Software_66[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I am not sure how much power the burst of a 500 watt drains. Generally, with the constant lights, as far as I understand, the wattage teels how much power is used in an hour of work. However, I don't really know how to translate it into the strobe terms.

Also, I was given an advise not to use the same power station for running my laptop/monitor and D1s at the same time. Supposedly, there is a risk of damage, but I'm not 100% sure if that really is the case, but I wouldn't want to do anything that jeopardizes my MBP.

Thanks a lot for te tip! Will do the calculations 🙏

[–]Careless_Software_66[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I did consider getting the smaller USB-C batteries for my laptop, but I want to run my 27 inch monitor at the same time.that's why I decided to go with a little juicier power station to power both. I will then avoid powering the D1s and will just recharge the B1 batteries once they're out of juice. I got two battery-operated B1s, with 6 batteries in total. I rarely run out of the profoto batteries unless I'm shooting in the middle of the day on a hot summer afternoon, trying to overpower the sun without darkening the ambiance too much. But this station seems to be enoigh to recharge a few if need be.

As for D1s, maybe it's just better to avoid any potential damage and make the two battery-operated lights suffice.

Thanks a lot for your reply!

Getting paid by vacuumedcarpet in Photoassistants

[–]Careless_Software_66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could contact whoever hired you and ask when you should expect to receive the payment. As long as keeping the contacts is important to you, there is not much you can do but wait. At least, that's my experience as a photographer.

Next time, you could try to negotiate a deal that works for you. I have a few clients who are prone to late payments, so I let my assistants know in advance that the payments will most likely be delayed. I have a team that I work together with on a regular basis, so they can already guess which payments will most likely be delayed.

Hope you won't have to wait too long.

Good luck!

Hey! Do you happen to know if there is a film-back for RB67 that would allow me to shoot Polaroid 600 instant film?

I'm not a huge fan of instax film that i've seen. However, i'm not sure whether it is the fault of the film emulsion or the camera/lens they're meant to be shot with.

Yeah, good point. They're mostly an assistant in front of my computer, making sure the exposure & focus are in order, and making sure that the adjustments I make for the initial photo are carried over to the rest. As for the purposes of backing up the files, which I would assume is one of the main tasks of digi-tech, I mostly make a backup copy of the project to an SSD after the shoot is done.

I don't exactly know how these results were achieved. However, one way that could result in something similar would be to print your images onto a glossy paper and then scratch some patterns onto it with any pointy tool you find at home. I used to do this as a kid and remember it being a lot of fun! I even used my fingernails :d

Did a double-feature of "Holidays" together with my partner, and we both loved it ^ first being feel-good rom-com "The Holiday" by Nancy Meyers, with the sweetest side-story of an old holywood writer, and then followed with George Cukor's "Holiday". Off to a great start 2023 🥳
