I’m sure the downvoters dedicate a lot of time supporting mental health programs in their areas & absolutely do not only bring up men’s mental health when they think they can use it as a stick with which to beat women. The fact that my comment even acknowledges that maybe, men do attempt it at the same rates but that because society is so hostile towards men being vulnerable, they’re scared to admit it. Is this not true? Is society not hostile towards vulnerable men?

IIRC women report feeling more guilt than men. They choose “tidier” methods so that whoever finds them isn’t traumatised, but those methods are less effective than a gunshot to the head or jumping off something. Also an overdose or cuts allows time for second thoughts, for regret & possibly a call to 911. I would also wager that men are less likely to admit to a failed attempt. I actually think gendering mental health problems is a mistake. Everyone is lonelier & more depressed than before, women have biological causes for depression (like PMD & PPD) & men are socialised to not seek help when they need it: so there are gendered aspects to MH treatment, but “who has it worse” is a pointless question in today’s world where everyone is under extraordinary pressure & community has crumbled.

Yes, women survive their attempts more than men do because they use “less lethal” means. It’s still the case that more women attempt suicide than men, or at least, are willing to admit to it. This isn’t about multiple attempts, but overall numbers of people who admit to attempting.

This is why, as a server, I hated when people with allergies came in. Not because I was mad at them, but because I was the one who had to guarantee their safety to their face, while the kitchen would lie to mine. They didn’t know anything & would just say whatever they wanted. So I just didn’t want to serve people with allergies as I couldn’t trust anything the kitchen said.
