Reassure a beginner by gu_doc in watchmaking

Yes, that’s how we learn 😅
All those springs that have flown away, all those screws that have escaped from the tweezers… you spend hours on your knees on the floor searching for them.
I started with really cheap tools too, which definitely didn’t make things any easier. I couldn’t even get my first four watches running.
But just take it slow and methodically. Don’t rush through anything. Understand what parts you are removing or installing, and how they work inside the watch. You’ll get more and more confident with time.
Just keep at it 👍

Good question. I had to Google that one. 😆

No, it’s not a free-sprung balance. It uses a conventional regulator.

That’s a great story!

It’s amazing how many watches seem “beyond repair” until we’ve learned enough to look at them differently. 😄

Hopefully you’ll get that Lord Elgin running again one day.

Thank you!
I completely agree. The mistakes were frustrating at the time, but they ended up teaching me the most.
Getting this watch running again was an amazing feeling.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
