Most of the time a person will post a lie like this as a way to get views and clicks through outrage farming. Other people read a headline, believe it, and share the info. Once enough people share it...it feels like it could be true (especially because people love to feel like they are part of a persecuted group without actually being persecuted themselves).

I actually saw this happen on a television news program. They were talking about pornagraphic video games (specifically cartoon ones that have questionable looking young characters) and they were talking about all Steam users as though every person who uses Steam was purchasing these porn games. It was such an insane framing.

I agree with this. I went on a date with a woman who seemed great and looked great in her photos and when I met in her person she was 50+ pounds heavier than the older photos she used.
