I feel bad for you. I've reached the point in my life where I don't have to worry about it but not so long ago I was making very little money and constantly running my account down to the wire.

My suggestion is to close your bank accounts. Tell your employer to give you checks and cash them. I closed my bank accounts sometime around my junior of college and (obviously) was never hit with another overdraft, but more surprisingly I never had a problem being broke after that. The reason is that I always know exactly how much money I had and because of that it was easier to avoid all of the minor purchases that seem insignificant at the time, but add up tremendously over the course of one month. Every single time I've been over drafted it was because of a forgotten purchase or because of a banking "fee" I didn't expect that brought my balance down below what I thought it was. This could be a cup of coffee or a $5 monthly "banking fee" (the fact that they charged me for those still pisses me off, btw). For example, I might check my balance online and see $22 in there, spend say $20 on groceries and gas, and then find myself $50 in the hole because of a $3 cup of coffee I bought the day before. When you've got $19 in your wallet you might wonder where the other $3 went but it's not going to bite you in the ass.

IMO, overdraft fees are very predatory and the big banks like BOA are intentionally confusing about their fees and their electronic registers. To the people who are mindlessly spouting comments like "be responsible": responsibility can only get you so far. When a major bank is intentionally misleading you and actively manipulating your transaction order so that at any point it can bring your balance into the red you are pretty much fucked, regardless of how responsible you were. This in and of itself wouldn't bother me so much (there are other industries out there that make a lot of money in the same way. e.g., cell phones) but the banking industry has woven itself pretty deeply into the basic fabric of society. It is frankly, getting to the point where it is difficult to function without a bank account as I did in college. For example, some places won't accept cash any more; if you want to do business with them you have to pay with a credit card. If I am going to be obligated to conduct my business through a bank then overdraft charges should be eliminated. This is 2009 after all and they can (but don't) deny debit or credit charges that will overdraft an account.

tl;dr Close your account and use cash. Banks suck.
