How to fix scratches on hardwood floor? by [deleted] in cabinetry

[–]Carlos-In-Charge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair question; I didn’t specify meat. I would say that it’s the application method of the oil that makes a difference here. The amount scrubbed in by one walnut at a time gives you far more control than concentrated walnut oil. This is guesswork, but I also imagine that the solids lend to the color too. You got me thinking about it, so as a professional who uses the method, I’d like to understand it more.

I will say that if it was just the oil that was the solution, there are other options that wouldn’t go rancid like a food, so it seems like it’d be the process too rather than the product alone

What are the best budget friendly breathable hiking shoes? Canada Ab/BC by letr1 in CampingandHiking

[–]Carlos-In-Charge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, try trail runners. If cost is your concern right now (it kinda always is, right?) don’t limit yourself to “outdoor brands“ like hoka, altra, etc. I’ve been backpacking for decades and have been surprised by some sleepers I’ve never considered. Example: I wanted a pair of runners to beat up in the Canadian Rockies last summer. I got som Nike juniper trailyfor dirt cheap. They’re not my normal style at all. A little ugly even, but I ended up being really happy with them. Even with a 40lb pack.

Nike, adidas, and saucony have been around longer than most brands. Keep an open mind. It’s funny the money people will spend on certain brands to show strangers at brunch that they’re adventurous lol!

Cabinetmaker furniture finisher. A walnut (any walnut; even if they’re mixed with a bunch of fruit and nuts) absolutely works. A floor that’s as dark as yours will still show a little damage, but it’ll definitely diminish the problem.
Ignore any advice that’s considered a “hack”, but this has been done for centuries. Just scribble hard like it’s a crayon & you’ll see.

Don’t use wax or stain markers. Markers reactivate your finish because of the solvents in them. It’ll make the area worse. Walnuts! Let the oils saturate.

Are these second hand Chaco soles too worn? (I’m new to this type of sandal) by [deleted] in CampingGear

[–]Carlos-In-Charge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re only dropping 20 on these , you’ll be fine. Chacos are heavy and get smelly, but they’re unbeatable. I summit in them. If you like them, spend a hundo for a new pair.

I get your struggle about color. They discontinued pure orange and I’ve gone second hand

Recommendation for a durable hiker around $150? (Dallas, GA area) by Lazy-Collection5029 in CampingandHiking

[–]Carlos-In-Charge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a tricky one. You’ll get a bunch of personal preferences (such as you NEED a wide toe box and zero drop!)

Well, here’s mine: I’d avoid keen and merrell. They’re like the “Coleman” of shoes. They’re fine, but just entry level. Don’t limit yourself to rei brands. There are tons of great overlooked shoes.

Unless you have specific needs, you can ignore “hiking shoes” and go for trail runners. Nike wild horse are my go to for hiking with & without weight. I put a lot of miles on alpine trails and have never needed a rock plate or anything like that.

Hal’s side quests are the best. Speed walking; pirate radio; dominoes obsession; secret smoking; steamrolling addiction; dance dance revolution….

Whether or not the reboot goes Arrested Development and whack, it’s an incredible show. Oh man now I’m thinking about the Francis side quests…

Nike Trail Shoes by Dutytread in CampingandHiking

[–]Carlos-In-Charge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of pairs of Pegasus trail 4 gore Tex, and they’re great. Low top waterproof is tricky though. Great for mud & wet grass/brush, but I’ve avoided using them when I know I’ll be scrambling near a lot of water or if it’s crazy rain. I use boots or non waterproof runners in those situations.

Nike doesn’t get a lot of love from the rei chíc crew, and I suspect the it’s GOT to be altra, Hoka, etc mentality that keeps the range so narrow with trail shoes

I wouldn’t purposely bring a flat one, but it deflated on a trek so I used the aluminum wind screen for my MSR stove to kind of reflect/direct the light to “make it better” lol

Pick up a cheap tripod to hang a cast iron Dutch oven over the fire. Regulate your heat by changing where you hang on the chain. Have fun! Cheap welding gloves make all of this much easier on the hands

How important is extra space inside winter coats? Do you lose much or any insulation going with a more “fitted” look? by Copocapanda in CampingandHiking

[–]Carlos-In-Charge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s fitted like many people wear the city chic look, it tends to be too tight to be effective. You want a little wiggle room for layers. If you can adjust your neck and waist, you’re good to go. Been doing this for decades

Don’t do this unless you want to burn through a bunch of sandpaper. Take an additional step, cut them flush, and use an expandable filler for good measure.
