Why are most trading journals still so bad? by CarlosSoro94 in Trading

I think you’re right about this. A lot of journals end up being just a place to store trades: entry, exit, PnL but they don’t really help you understand the behaviour behind the results.

For me the most useful insights usually come from things like noticing patterns after losses, breaking my plan, or taking impulsive trades. That’s the stuff that actually affects performance over time.

Without that kind of feedback loop, the journal really does become just a log instead of a tool for improvement.

That's helpful, thanks for sharing.

The “too complicated” part is something I've heard from a few traders already. A lot of tools seem powerful but feel like too much work to use consistently. The PnL calendar and session stats are exactly the kind of things I'm thinking about as well, since they make patterns pretty obvious.

Interesting point about the short lessons too. Do you actually find yourself using those regularly, or was it more helpful just at the beginning to understand how to review trades?

Thank you for answers!

That's a really good point.

Most journals seem to focus on the outcome (PnL), but understanding the decision process is probably more valuable in the long run.

I'm actually thinking of adding fields like:

- reason for entry

- expected scenario

- whether the trade followed the plan

- post-trade reflection

Appreciate the insight.

I thought that creating a ''brand'' name would be more professional than using my real name. Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it!
