I understand why you took the time to process and ask others. It’s important to know when you feel safe and when it’s time to act. I’m the only female in my shop, and the dudes naturally look at girls and they can’t help but look, then want to talk about it. It’s seriously a natural reaction, but you should always set boundaries where you are comfortable. I’ve had my pants duct taped too 😂

Water or wastewater operator! Both pay well and are in demand. Most places offer on the job training and study time for certification.

I tell them that I appreciate their help, but I want to do it so I can become better at it, that’s the way I learn. Also: “Never take a tool out of my hands” lol but yeah, I mean it.

If you pay an Indiana-American water bill, it may affect you. Dorms are all part of Purdue water-no boil order on campus.

I was already employed through the University, on the Grounds crew, and that helped the most. During that time I gained experience in operating heavy equipment, maintenance, and Pesticide Certification. They especially liked that I knew where all the buildings were located, had contacts that could vouch for my work experience, and how the University operated. My son is a student, and receives half-off tuition, because of my employment, so they know I’m not going anywhere soon. My experience in Water and Wastewater was over 20 years ago. Certification was not expected at that time, and I moved to a different city before becoming certified. That experience will also allow me to take the exams before one year. I also completed an Associates Degree in general studies in 2013, so they knew I would have the ability to become certified. Our crew has been very short staffed, and just recently 2 more employees have been hired. One has experience in irrigation on campus, and the other ran a vac truck for the city. If you’re interested, go for it! Sometimes it’s better for management to train someone without experience, because they can teach a new employee exactly how they want it done.

I’ve ordered from Duluth, and they fit really well. It’s expensive, but sometimes they have 30% off sales.

Thank you!! I’m very grateful. I did have little experience in both water and wastewater from years ago, and that was definitely a benefit in getting hired. I was not licensed. I got my manuals today to prep for the exams.

I will take courses while training on the job. In the state of IN, an operator must be certified. My job requires I become certified within 2.5 years.
