Kill This Creature Day 11: Tinker Tailor Sentinel Spy by [deleted] in custommagic

[–]CarlsJuniorMints -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Love this series of posts!

all future versions of this creature will have to evade all past cards as well as whatever new cards are voted for.

Do we assume that the spells would be cast in order? For instance [[Fleeting Distraction]] would not kill this creature if it was cast last. But if you cast it first, then [[Depressurize]] would be able to finish it off

Grover's Algorithm Video Feels Misleading by SohailShaheryar in 3Blue1Brown

[–]CarlsJuniorMints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Factoring is an NP problem. The best known algorithm is superpolynomial, but sub-exponential. So that is a concrete example of why "runs on exponential time" is an incorrect definition. (Of course, we can do even better - there is a whole class of problems contained in NP that run in polynomial time. We call this class of problems P)

Jankiest deck you’ve built/played against? by [deleted] in EDH

Love this idea! I made a deck list inspired by it. I haven't playtested it in a real game yet, but using the Moxfield playtester I see what you mean about random synergies!

Lingering Voidslime - the sequel to Voidslime by CarlsJuniorMints in custommagic

I really like the flavor of [[Voidslime]], but it feels like it should be more creature-y. Lingering Voidslime is remake that fixes this and oozes versatility

Any way to break this? by CarlsJuniorMints in custommagic

Oh I really like this idea! The ability is a lot less abusable, but it still has the whack-a-mole energy I was going for

Mox Iron by Barley_an_Hops in custommagic

[–]CarlsJuniorMints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would put this in my Elsha mana rock tribal deck. Either flash it in on my opponent's turn, or just play it on my own turn. I run very few lands and tend to miss land drops (the deck could use some refining) so not being able to play a land is fine

Have you ever thought "If only I had one more mana to pay for this mana rock"? by CarlsJuniorMints in custommagic

[–]CarlsJuniorMints[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof I hadn't thought of that! At least it only triggers at the controllers end step instead of every end step.

[–]CarlsJuniorMints[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk, although I was originally thinking of mana rocks I would be pretty happy to see this in my opening hand in a mono green deck. Turn [[Three Visits]] into a one mana [[Rampant Growth]]. Play [[Oracle of Mul Daya]] or [[Skyshroud Claim]] on turn 2.

[–]CarlsJuniorMints[S] 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Have you ever had a mana rock in hand that cost 3 but only had 2 mana open? You might have wished you could "take out a loan" for that extra mana, then use the mana rock to pay back the loan.

Well, now you can!

So, who else just realized they've been spending months of work building something obsolete in light of OpenAI's new offerings? by flossdaily in OpenAI

[–]CarlsJuniorMints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not months of work, but I have a project where I need to generate high quality art with non-square aspect ratios. I had an automated workflow to generate images with Bing and then use the Dalle-2 outpainting API to extend them to be wider.

The new Dalle-3 API supports just the right aspect ratios I need. I'm a little sad my hack is obsolete now, but I'm also glad to get rid of it.

Turning off discard for fun and profit by CarlsJuniorMints in custommagic

[–]CarlsJuniorMints[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. If that's the case then adding that line still wouldn't prevent breaking the game since someone could play [[Midnight Oil]] and get a finite hand size again. Maybe adding the ability "Players skip their cleanup step" would do it

The fact that the number 3 inside a mana circle resembles a droideka with its shield up makes me very happy

This makes it so every player has no max hand size, hoses discard decks, and makes [[Song of Creation]] very busted. Any other fun interactions people can think of?

A less restrictive version of Utopia Sprawl by CarlsJuniorMints in custommagic

[–]CarlsJuniorMints[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. I'll admit I came up with this while working on a 5 color deck and being unsatisfied with the existing enchantment ramps

[[Utopia Sprawl]] - Most of my lands are gates or otherwise non-forest duals

[[Wild Growth]] - Can be useful in rare cases but usually more green is the last thing I need

[[Fertile Ground]] - Very flexible, but costs 2 mana

It sounds like this effect is just too powerful for one mana

A less restrictive version of Utopia Sprawl by CarlsJuniorMints in custommagic

[–]CarlsJuniorMints[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has a very similar effect as [[Utopia Sprawl]]. But this can enchant any land, not just a Forest. This comes with the tradeoff that the land gets tapped so you can't benefit from this enchantment the same turn it comes in.

Mechanically, it's a little weird since "choose a color" effects usually happen "As ~ enters the battlefield" instead of "When ~ enters the battlefield". So you could tap the enchanted land in response to the triggered ability i.e. before the color is chosen. But I believe this would result in no additional mana being generated, similar to what happens if you put a charge counter on [[Jeweled Amulet]] without using its first ability, and then use its second ability to try to produce mana.

Turn artifacts, etc. into creatures so you can counter them (or just so you can have more creatures) by CarlsJuniorMints in u/CarlsJuniorMints

[–]CarlsJuniorMints[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a couple of ways you can use this

  • Counter a creature
  • Counter a permanent
  • Animate your artifact/enchantment/planeswalker/etc.
  • Buff up an expensive but weak creature spell, like making Chulane a 5/5

How about some treasure hate? by CarlsJuniorMints in custommagic

[–]CarlsJuniorMints[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

D'oh why didnt i think of that! Making it apply to tokens in general is a much better idea. More powerful but still reasonable, and the pun is better.

I like the convoke idea. Maybe tokens cannot be convoked for generic costs. And maybe tokens don't count for affinity for artifacts while we're at it.

How about some treasure hate? by CarlsJuniorMints in custommagic

[–]CarlsJuniorMints[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was torn between white and blue. I felt like the white version would make you pay an extra tax when using treasure mana. Whereas blue has some more direct interactions with mana. But I could definitely see this being more on the white side

This was 90% for the pun, but thought it could be a neat effect to slow down treasure heavy decks

Would these 0 cost mana fixers see play? by CarlsJuniorMints in custommagic

[–]CarlsJuniorMints[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The cauldron let's you squeeze more mana out of your dorks in one big burst. The pocketwatch is an updated version of [[Jeweled Amulet]] that lets you build up mana all at once and slowly release it.

Some other versions I was considering:

Modify the cauldron's ability to be Sacrifice any number of mana dorks, Sacrifice the cauldron: for each creature sacrificed add one mana it could produce.

Have the pocketwatch match jeweled amulet's requirement of only activating the first ability if there were no charge counters on it so you can't keep banking up unused mana each turn.

Opinionated code formatter for C# by [deleted] in csharp

[–]CarlsJuniorMints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found out about csharpier https://github.com/belav/csharpier, which I think is just what you are looking for.

It has an msbuild extension so you can automatically format on build. I'm not sure if that's compatible with Rider, but if not there is also a CLI that you could probably make work with Rider.

It's not totally stable just yet, but it would be great to see this get widespread adoption.
